As many as will fit? What form did you want answers to this to take?

The mockups and the current page both have fine small print, but I wouldn't go
much smaller.

In the blue Newsgroups sidebar. Move the 'newsgroups' header to the top. Put
the most recent four posts up, include a link (an icon with two stick figures
talking brick or something would be sweet) to news.lugnet.com (or whatever
place will gateway to all the newsgroups), display the top five rated
threads, include the little menu of common links if space permits, and at the
bottom have a search box for newsgroups only. Move the membership info out of
the news bar.

That seems like the kind of blurb that you would use as a headline for a couple
weeks before transitioning to the next neat LUGNET milestone or community event
kind of thing. Maybe indented from the left to the bottom left of the big
picture in itallics or something.
Other page ideas:
I think that it would be appropriate to devote a bit of the top level page to
whatever financing scheme(s) you go for. Maybe a rotating reminder every time
the page is requested: "remember LUGNET can get a comission from Amazon.com
orders by doing such and such" one time and "To help sponsor all the great
services that LUGNET provides, donate through Paypal.com by clicking here" the
next.
Something that I'd _really_ like to see is a customizable column on either the
right or left. I'd like to be able to paste up links, specify an algorithm for
news-link display, etc. I'd like to be able to display the n most recent
threads in which I (or someone else?) have posted to help track conversations.
I'd like to be able to bookmark specific news posts, pages, etc. I could do
some of this with FTX if it were applied only to that user column. Some of the
really valuable things to do with that space would require extended function.
In your design, the newsgroups have a place of primacy with a colored column,
and I think that makes sense, especially with it being off to the right. But
the three sections: guide, community, and market ought to have serious thought
put into what order they appear in and what appears in the limited screen real
estate. I wonder if it would be worth having those contents dynamically
determined by user hits or votes or something. I guess I tend to think that
community should be far left (and include membership stuff), but I'm not sure
why.
Above, I suggested having a newsgroup only search in the newsgroup column.
This would necessitate having the general purpose search tool elsewhere on the
page. But I don't know where. Maybe where it is is fine, but the blue column
shouldn't go all the way up. The news only search box could then appear at the
bottom of the column with the other news tools.
Anyway, you asked for feedback.
