I was reading the Australian Local LEGO group postings when I found this
comment. I thought this was great idea!!! The Crocodile Dundee bushmen down-
under have a conversation count of 1098. I believe that can surpass their
tenacity, so I suggest that we in CANADA unite and create a stronger sense of
community. The noble citizens of Ontario must unite to form a collective!!!
The Vancouver mountain-people even have a higher conversation count (Vancouver
= 177, Ontario = 92) than we in Ontario do. I’m proud of the creation of the
Vancouver LEGO Clubs and its web page, BUT Ontario MUST also display our LEGO
dementia. I really hope this works, cause I’m new around here and I’d really
like to get to know every one in the Canadian LEGO community!!

What sort of bits are useful for that? I'm hopefully coming over later this
summer, so I could bring over *some* stuff, especially if there are some bits
that aren't that common. (I dunno - black plates, beams?) I've got a liberal
amount of spares including several hundred minifigs, mostly pirate, castle and
town.

Cool. Well, I'm not terribly familiar with the BrikWars rules, but I'm
prepared to learn. I'd suggest everyone who is interested go and check
out the BrikWars website

Let's see... The minifigs and related equipment are probably the most
useful thing you've mentioned; unless you want to build some warlike
vehicles, mecha, etc. In particular, I find myself short of pirates
when I play the Pirate game (which isn't BrikWars, BTW, but a Steve
Jackson original...) -- Lego sets usually put four or five crew on a
ship that I put perhaps 20 or 25 on...
Aside from that, actual pirate ships, or at least the hulls, masts, and
cannon.
I've got a considerable Lego collection when it comes to bricks, plates,
and the like; I should be able to cover the rest.
All right, we'll plan to play this summer...

I've collected quite a number of firing cannons :-) I hopefully have enough
piratey figs to make it worthwhile bringing them over, I'll get around to
counting soon.

Richard, let me be the first to show you how wrong you are!
you see, as I understand it, ALL themes are used as way to space my
technic beams. In fact, I'm looking at an older robot I made that made
use of some monorail parts. (smirk)
I've got a couple of "pizza to go" big red roof tiles that will go great
as a get-um scratched ramp for our sumo bot wars. (evil laugh)
and you just don't want to know about the 3 yellow wall thingies.......

Okay, it's time we do this and yes, I'll volunteer. (cough) I've been using
the term rtlToronto as our name, but I'm also partial to legoToronto.
After the 27th, I'll be changing the peach website to show events, folks in
Toronto, links to webpages as well as the robot contest material. I just
moved peach into a new server room so it'll be okay for quite a while.

But before anything is established, we must deliberate upon the formation of
a ‘super-secret-handshake.'
And then the creation of shirts with ‘nice’ embroidery can be discussed. Then,
once the handshake, shirts, and mascots have been instituted, World-Domination
can be the next priority. But, only after the 27th of May, cause we gotta play
before we can rule the world!
P.S. ‘LEGO Toronto’ is a great name, but I think 'TORALS' is cooler!

Association for Collaborative Ascension)I like ‘GATACA’ it ties into the movie!
But the best option is still ‘LEGO GTA.’ Simplicity is the best option.

There might have a problem with "LEGO GTA", or any LUG that uses the word
"LEGO" in the title?
I dunno why, but LUGTOR always makes me think of RAPTOR.. it reminds me of some
sci-fi-esque monster.. probably hiding in the swamp just as the colonists land
on the otherwise idyllic new world.. muhahahaa.. (but anyway!).

As to the question of the groups extent, I say we claim all Ontario, why not!
I’ve already laid claim to Hamilton, and Sudbury fell in line with no
resistance. BUT, I hesitate to march into Ottawa. That region has a semi-
active conversation rate, and I don’t wish to dominate them…yet. In the name
of Lego, all will be assimilated into the TORONTO collective!!!!!!!
This debate will be further continued in the forum of the LEGO robotics
competition on the 27th. Details shall be discussed and hopefully a consensus
will be reached upon the naming our regime.

In all seriousness, though, I have three main criteria for choosing a
group name:
1) It must not contain the word "Lego". Otherwise, we're just opening
ourselves up to getting a letter from TLG's lawyers; they've
demonstrated their interest in preserving their trademark in the past.
'Nuff said.
2) If we're trying to include the area shown on Eric's maps - that is,
all of southern Ontario, we ought not to use "Toronto" in the name or
acronym. It's not really being considerate to people in London or
Ottawa, right? And one thing I like about RTL / LUGNET, is that people
are usually considerate.
3) It's gotta sound/look nice.
Obviously, we can relax restriction 2 if we want to be a Toronto area
group.
So, of the suggestions so far, 8, 9, 10, 13 are OK for an Ontario group,
and 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 12 seem fine for a Toronto group. I don't mind
making it a Toronto group; and of course we'd welcome folks from all
over, but let's call a Toronto group a Toronto group, and an Ontario
group an Ontario group. :)

After the successful LEGO robotics competition that was held on the 27th was
adjourned, the group convened at a restaurant for further discussion. We
arrived at the conclusion that the name must be simple and direct. I believe
this was the name that was vaguely agreed upon? ---TLS Toronto Lego Society---
simple, direct, and inclusive to the greater Toronto area, and it was up to
code with Jeff Elliott’s ground rules!
Soooooo… do we have a consensus on this name. There must be a majority
decision. Changes, and revisions can still be made. But the ‘name list’ is
getting exceedingly long and I believe that we can arrive at a decision with a
simple vote. Do we agree upon the Toronto Lego Society (TLS)?

Yes, I have. In order to expedite and lead the process, I've been working
with Eric and we're now under the title "rtlToronto" as that's the name we've
used for email distributions for the robotics contests and the webpage etc.
The LUGMAP now points to us on http://peach.mie.utoronto.ca/events/lego
Let's talk about this on Saturday at the Robotics event, see you all there!

Anyway in trading E-mails with Calum I let him know that if you decide to
change your name to something besides "rtlToronto" I would be glad to change it
for you. As far as your current "area of influence" I have Calum suggested
southern Ontario. If you are going for world domination let me know and I can
expand your territory :-).

This issue was already was addressed OVER 6 days ago, and Mr. Husby simple
used the Newsgroups that I wrote in. It’s not his fault for following the
Newsgroup template that I had set forth. You may not be the sharpest tool in
the shed, but you must understand that this was the only incident of
accidental cross-posting!

First off, I don't appreciate the insult...
I am well aware that the issue arose 6 days ago. When I saw what looked like
the innapropriate cross posting continuing, I chose to remind folks that the
thread was not welcome.
Incidentally, unless you had posted the original post from the web, you could
have chosen to prevent further erroneous cross posting by canceling the
original post, or you could have asked Todd to cancel it.
I really wish Todd would change his mind about applying editorial control so
that errors like this could be nipped in the bud easier. The more people who
use lugnet, the more a problem this will become.
Perhaps Todd could at least consider adding appropriate "follow ups to"
headers to misplaced posts (which would not be altering anything the poster
wrote, but would make it almost certain that responses would not continue to
flood the wrong group).
follow-ups to lugnet.admin.general (which is where I should have sent follow
ups originally).

Rereading <http://www.lugnet.com/loc/ca/on/tor/?n=64> it does seem as if there
is a pretty happy and healthy Torontonian LEGO community, and there are regular
robotics-type events!

- this group isn't that quiet in comparison (it isn't abnormally quiet).
