Hello Lugnet,

My name is Molly Friedrich.  I was a regular poster a few years ago under my old
name, although things have changed a lot for me and I needed some time to
process everything.

Some may have considered me an innovator in the space and mecha communites.  I
helped to found the NILTC.  I was also known for my Star Wars MOCs, many of
which won awards and I was lucky enough to be able to send a minifigure scale
Sandcrawler MOC to Celebration II by special request of FBTB.

I wanted you guys to know my galleries are back up:

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?m=mollyfriedrich

I am not returning to Lego as a hobby just yet.  I simply put my images back
online because I found some small amount of discussion on a Lego fan board
regarding my MOCs being deleted off Brickshelf (specifically the Benevolent
Grace), and the concensus seemed to be that it was unfortunate.  I am sorry, I
honestly didn't think anyone would notice, but the error in judgement is now
fixed.

I don't know if I'll ever feel comfortable posting here or building Lego MOCs again but I wanted to let you know I do miss it a little and my partner Vanessa and I attended NWBrickcon last weekend and enjoyed seeing all the wonderful creations.  She is interested in Lego and may eventually pull me into the hobby with her.  Personally... I dunno, I didn't feel welcomed at all by the NWBrickcon by the AFOLs who I recognized there, and honestly I don't really blame you individually that much.  I understand it's probably very hard to "get" if you haven't ever felt what I feel.   All I ask is that you please respect me enough to call me by my real name (the name I am posting under now), and use the correct pronouns if you are going to talk about me.

I just want people to know I had no unusual ulterior motives, and that I am
comfortable now and living a happy life with the love of my life, Vanessa.  I
work at a grocery store in Seattle, and if anyone there knows what I have been
through in my life or has a problem with it, they haven't shown it.

thanks for your time, and happy building!
Molly

Hi Molly,

Thanks for putting all those excellent models back up. I hope you do regain an
interest/acceptance in Lego again and wish you all the best wherever life may
take you.

Thanks, Tim.

I do have a feeling I will be back pretty soon.  Vanessa has been talking about
Lego since the NWBrickcon and I think she's going to start building a castle
themed creation pretty quick.  Once I see someone tinkering with Lego I know the
bug will bite me again.  Its just frustrating to not have the parts anymore that
I used to have.

I do appreciate the kind words  :)

Sweet more CASTLE! Has Vanessa found classic-castle.com yet?

I was a first-time attendee at NW BRick Con this year and I look forward to
meeting the two of you next year.

definately.  I love cons; all the action, the giant multi-person layouts, the
utter geekiness of a room full of adults that love Lego so much and the wacky
conversations you overhear... some of my best memories are from Cons.

next year I'm going to be back on the other side of the table tho  :)   That was my first one as a lowly spectator and its not nearly as interesting as being involved.

I'm getting sneaky. A friend who likes LEGO saw the pics on Flickr from the Con
and I suggested she take the family down next year as spectators. Five minutes
in the room and I bet she we will be back the year following, as you say, on the
other side of the table! Mwuuuah ha ha [evil chuckle].

Thanks for putting the galleries back up.  I am happy to be able to make
comparisons between your Sand Crawler and the TLG Sand Crawler.

WRT the town/train stuff . . . I really like this red & tan building:
<http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?i=2068418>

Fire escapes!

I might mess around with a dark red version of that building.  Maybe a sand
green roof . . .

Thanks again!

Best,

Jonathan

I love fire escapes, I think I originally built that building just so I could
make the fire escapes on it  :B

it turned out to be one of my favorite things on my layout for the NILTC.  If I
were to retroactively name it, I would call it The Grumbels Building.  Its
inspired by those great turn of the century department stores like Gimbels,
Macy's etc... and I like the daily comic called Retail and in it they work at a
Grumbels.

Sorry for rambling a bit   :P

that would look really good, go for it!

Molly,

That's an unfortunate set of circumstances. I remember you from when you posted
before. You were, and presumably still are, a very leading edge builder. Just
let it be known that your skills will be missed. I'll make the leap though that
one day you'll be back. I'm hoping that your partner's interest keeps the embers
alive.

Thank you, I do agree its unfortunate in a lot of ways.  I wish this wasn't the
thing I had to deal with in my life, its been a very hard and lonely road to
walk at times.  Things are getting very good now, however.  I think I am happier
and more content in my personal life than I ever could have been.

And thank you for the kind words, I always felt that only a handful of people
even knew who I was back then... mostly .space people... and when they stopped
talking to me I just felt nothing was left for me to hold on to here.  Only Tim
Courtney and Todd Lehman were nice to me and it was appreciated... but I didn't
really talk to them enough to consititute a proper social group I guess.

anyways.  I will be back.  I can feel it.  I just need to start buying Lego
again because I have almost nothing right now and I can't build anything with
it.  With both Vanessa and I buying sets I imagine it will happen quicker than
not.  I am tempted to go buy a Star Destroyer today  :)

Hey Molly!

Good to see you posting again. I was going to write back to your original post,
but here looks like a better place to hang my response.

Just wanted to write and say I'm glad you're re-surfacing a bit, and glad you
were able to make it out to NWBC. I'm in a very dim ages, but I do keep tabs on
what is going on around the place and maintain contact with a few friends.
Though we haven't talked in a while, I'll always count you among mine. I hope
you get back into building because you're AMAZING at it and I love seeing what
you create.

-Tim

PS - I've made good use of your foliage in NILTC layouts, etc...

I remember you and Ondrew coming over to my place and helping me move when I was
preparing to move to Seattle, and I think I remember both of you stating with
some conviction that I would be back eventually.

thank you  :)   I'll be around, how can I resist the black-hole-like pull of The Brick?  What have you been doing for the last few years if you aren't building BTW?

That's awesome!  It does make me feel to good to know that all my Lego is out
there somewhere... hopefully being used in all sorts of MOCs.  Hell, a lot of
people must have parts from The BenGrace in their own ships... something to
think about anyways.

Is the NILTC still together?  I couldn't find anything on lugnet about them.

cheers!

Well, since finishing school in 05 I've been spending the time being the
entrepreneur I am and getting my life established. Way too much activity, ups
and downs, etc to talk about here, and probably more than you'd ever want to
hear about. Now things are looking very up, though, and I'm taking a bit of
transition time to--for lack of a better description--build out the foundation
of my life before taking the next entrepreneurial plunge, whatever that ends up
being :-)

Oh, and I'm doing a lot of bike riding, movie watching, and a moderate amount of
furniture refinishing and interior decorating, too.

I'm not exactly sure. I left the club in early 2004, actually, and kept in close
touch for about a year visting shows, etc, but since then have lost touch with
most of the folks. Ondrew isn't a member anymore either, and aside from us the
rest of the club never was all that much into posting on LUGNET, so I dunno...

Hi Molly -

Ahhh, I can't begin to tell you how happy I was to see "Subterfugitives" again.
I remember how excited and amazed I was when you first posted the chapters, and
I still consider them some of the most creative and evocative storytelling in
the hobby.  Here's hoping that we see the next chapter sometime!

hehe, I remember your reaction from back then  :)

thanks a lot, all I can think is that I look back now and I want to stab old me
for not buying a proper digital camera BEFORE making all those sets and MOCs!

As for more, I doubt it... but sometimes I wonder what it would be like if other
people tried to continue the story and link all the bits of plot together.  It
was going somewhere specific, although admittedly in a very oblique manner.

ah who knows, I could go back and do more... I don't like trying to predict things any more.   :)

Hey Molly

Just wanted to say that I like your stuff, some of your designs is really interesting and unusual.

I hope you’ll get back into Lego/Space again, there’s a new forum around, CSF, with a lot less history and mostly new people (like me) that may wish to get to know you (Molly), and would definitly like to see new stuff from you.

Don’t be shy

Cheers NB

I do appreciate the heads-up

If you mean classic-space.com it looks like a wonderful place and I will check it out more... although I see a lot of names running that place that probably don’t want me hanging around there too much. Its really not shyness as much as I am honestly not interested in forcing my presence somewhere I’m not welcome. Keep in mind that who I am is a pretty hard thing for those guys to truly accept since they knew me for years before and I never really gave them clue of what I was dealing with mentally. I take the fact that I haven’t seen them discussing me at all or talked to me at all to mean they aren’t yet cool with me being who I am. And I am comfortable giving them that space.

hehe, I said space.

Molly, your building will always be legendary, it has been an inspiration for
all of us. I remember them before and it was a sad day when they dissappeared. I
help admin classic-space.com and I want to offically let you know we'd love to
have you back. Yours, mine, or anyone else's personal life really should not be
an issue. We stick to the brick and let those things which are personal be
off-topic just like how what I had for dinner is off-topic as well.

I'd love to see you back in the .space community with new MOCs someday.

Deal  :)

Sounds good to me, and thank you...

also, after talking to the Grand Admiral, I think some of what I was percieving
as a cold shoulder was merely a misunderstanding of some sort between two people
going into their own respective dark ages.

anyways,
I can't wait to build something again.  Its been 4 years of no Lego for me.

Hey, don’t sell yourself short. I’ve seen people link to your MOCs more than once on that site and never once read a bad remark of any history...only regret that such a great builder gave up the hobby. There are some people there who really don’t get along that well, but it never seems to be personal, only heated opinions about each other’s building skills...or lack thereof.

I never really knew you, just your work and the name attached to it, I missed all the drama that you’re refering to...and so did a lot of other people. And quite frankly, not many people will really care about it. They just want to see cool MOCs!!

Hey Molly, I've always been a fan of your mocs, especially Port Saturn and the
S.E.T.  Let me just echo the others by saying that I hope you pick up the hobby
again and continue to bring the noise.  If nothing else, maybe you'll feel
comfortable enough to hang out here and give the occaisonal comment/smack. Glad
to have you back.

ah HA!  You were the one who liked Port Saturn  :]

(sorry I kid, but I never really felt that MOC lived up to what I wanted it to
be personally, maybe it was because of all the trans-antifreeze (probably my
least favorite color)... but I'm glad you enjoyed it nevertheless)

And I'm always glad to smack noobs about.  Point me at some!  hehe...

thanks,
Molly

I just wanted to say welcome back and thanks for reposting these MOCs.  You
really are a legendary builder.  Space is better with you around than without.

I bought Vanessa and I some sets today to celebrate her starting a new job, so
I'll definately be back soon.

Now let's hope I can life up to my own reputation as a builder!   LOL

Molly, welcome back.
I never really felt like I got to know you before and always have been a fan.
I'm actaully a little ashamed that I didn't really get a chance to say hi at
NWBrickCon.  But then I like to run around a lot.
If you decide to show up next year or come to a meeting, stop me and say hi!

well, I mainly wanted to talk to you because I really enjoyed that big blue ship
you were displaying.  I love all the details, like my favorite was probably the
rings around the ladder in the bay area.  That sort of attention to little stuff
is just great to see in person!

Thank you Molly.
Tell you what, I'm in the process of moving so my Lego is kind of mushed up
between boxes at the moment, but if you're interested you're more than welcome
to come visit and check out Dragon after the move.
Drop me a line and we'll work it out.

deal... I want V to get a look at what a real Lego collection looks like, since
we'll probably have a lot in a year or two I want to make sure she knows what
she's getting into here.

and I would love to see the Dragon close up, does it open up?  IE does it have
interior details and stuff?

see you in space  :)

I’ll be honest enough to say I don’t remember you (than again I don’t darken .space’s door often) but looking around at your MOCs I was impressed by how they’ve withstood the test of time... I particularly liked this little one, because if it has to be space, it may as well be aquazone appropriate (for me anyway). Welcome back all the same, do stay...

God Bless,

Nathan

Holy cow!  I was like, "Hmmm, Molly must have come and gone a LONG time ago,
'cause I don't remember any of this and I've been here for a few years" then I
clicked your Brickshelf folder link and I was like, "Holy crap!  I remember when
those MOCs were introduced!!! I KNOW this person!! (sorta... in an online forum
kind of way...)

FANTASTIC!!!

Glad to see you back here!

The last thing I remember from you was an LDraw kind of thing, real boxy, but
HUGE with a fin above and a gun pod below...it wasn't long after you had decided
to sell all your Lego and I thought you said you might do more of those Ldraw
image things but I didn't see any.

Can't wait to see you building again!!

well, its good to be coming back!  I feel like a part of me that was missing is
being put back where it should be.  I never really enjoyed selling my collection
much, it was a practical issue at the time, and it was something I definately
had to do to because it helped me come to terms with issues I needed to deal
with.  I was using my Lego addiction (thats what it was to me) as a crutch to
avoid introspection.

yep, the ARC.  Its the tank that channels lighting.  when I go military, I go
military in a strange way I guess.

Can't wait to see you building again!!

can't wait to catch up on everything I've missed in the last few years!

like this whole grey color thing... I like the new greys... are people still
freaked out about that?

Welcome back Molly!

I for one missed your work immensely.

You are definitely an innovator in many LEGO themes. I still think your spaceships are some of the finest ever built.

I’m glad you made this post and I’m glad you put your stuff back up. I think I speak for most people when I say that I would like to see you post again. You are a tremendously talented builder. However, I also understand that you might not feel comfortable returning. Whatever you decide to do, your existing work will continue to speak for itself.

wow, coming from you that means a lot, Mladen. I have always been knocked out by your stuff, almost more than any other single builder out there. I am happy to see you are still knocking around Lugnet. What have you been up to the last few years?

well, so far I have been overwhelmed. I feel very welcomed on Lugnet, and I really appreciate it. My partner Vanessa and I are really looking forward to getting our collection of bricks up to par as fast as we can so we can start enjoying our new main hobby! Until then I guarantee I will be watching Lugnet and giving feedback when I appropriate.

cheers! M

Higher education. It’s the reason why I haven’t been able to build as much in these past four years. :-(

Currently, I mostly hang out at the Mecha Hub. It’s a separate site for LEGO mecha enthusiasts. I invite you to drop by sometime, either at the forums or the chatroom. You will be warmly welcomed! :-D

That is fantastic! LEGO is really more like an addiction than a hobby. ;-)
