This is a great idea. But very hard to offer just one theme (sub-theme)!!

I filled out the ‘form’ below, but first some brainstorming and such...

I’ve commented earlier that the “strip mall”... perhaps “mini mall” is a better term... idea was a really good one.

In reviewing this and other threads, it seems there are a few common categories of ideas for town/city sub-themes:

•Mass Transit - including airports, metro-trains/subways, freeways, taxi cabs, buses, streetcars, etc.

•Freight/Cargo Transport - including harbors, freight trains, warehouses, trucks, etc.

•Construction - including all the yellow cranes and loaders most Lego towns have ample amounts of.

•Municipal - including city halls, musuems, schools, hospitals, churches, police and fire stations, cemeteries, parks, etc.

•Utilities - including telephone poles, power plants, aquaducts, treatment plants, sewer systems, etc.

•Industrial - including factories, mills, mines, refineries, processing and packing plants, etc.

•Commercial - including retail stores, malls, restaurants, cafes, theaters, arcades, supermarkets, service stations, etc.

•Residential - including houses, lots of houses, apartment complexes, condominiums, inner-city project housing, mansions, trailor parks, and some more houses.

My thoughts on these:

Of these, I think the first three - Mass Transit, Freight/Cargo, and Construction have been well covered by Lego town/city sets dating back to the late 1970’s (maybe earlier). No offense to the train folks or those that want more cranes, but we must admit there have been more of those than, say, factories or schoolhouses available as official sets from TLG.

The Municipal category (as I’ve defined it) has had a lot of representation (as mentioned) in the form of police, fire, and rescue sets. There have been a lack of schools and museums, but the recent anniversary set with its city hall was a nice addition here.

The Utilities group, which falls between municipal and industrial, is one that hasn’t had much representation. It could be hard to design “action” sets here, but I agree with the post earlier this thread that a water plant or a landfill might be worthwhile.

The nitty-gritty of the Industrial category has seen few sets from TLG over the years. I find this surprising since all those sets in the freight group really should have something to be carrying. A post I saw in another thread suggested a sawmill as something that could fit in with a train layout, which is a neat idea.

Despite my earlier support for the mini-mall idea, I must admit there have already been quite a few sets in the Commercial category. However, most of these have been reworked versions of the same gas station concept. The motorcycle shop set of the mid-80’s was a great exception. Still, more shops could be good.

And finally the Residential group has never been properly included among TLG sets. Sure there was the odd town house set here and there. But look around real places today. Housing makes up most of what you see, whether in a small town or a big city. Think of this: Does your Lego town include a house or apartment for every two or three mini-figures?

...But in the end we must also consider how marketable a new line might be to the core audience (kids). So what new sub-theme do I fill out in the form Tim offered?... How about something completely different...

My Idea for the ‘form’:

Name of Theme: Ultimate Workforce
Short description of Theme: Inspired by edu-tainment television programs on exciting jobs, the series includes sets with a blend of industry and action.
Three possible sets for Theme with descriptions:
1) Dangerous Catch - Build this crabboat and help the fishermen battle the waves and weather of the worlds toughest seas. Includes grab catching “pots”, a captain, and two deckhands.
2) Arctic Truckers - Get the cargo to the most remote northern towns on time! Includes hard-weather tractor trailor, a rescue ski-mobile and dog, and two mini-figures.
3) Deep Drillers - This oil rig is fully equiped to conquer the depths to fuel the world. To succeed, the drill crew must face the dangers of high pressure drills and wind torn derricks. Set includes “exploding” derrick, helicopter, and diver’s boat. Comes with a crew of five minifigures.

Such a series could be expanded based on other tv shows too... Custom motorcycle makers, house remodelers, etc.

Well. That’s probably more than enough from me for a while.
