The 856 bulldozer was one of the sets I really wanted when I was a

early Technic sets, though: The yellow forklift, the red tractor and the
mobile crane.  I liked the mobile crane best of the said sets.

I remember this exactly, a friend of mine had the bulldozer and I was so
jealous of him! Aside from the set as a whole, I think the parts I coveted
most would have to be the 4 large gears, the caterpillar tracks and the
side parts of the digger bucket.

The mobile crane was smashing at the time, in fact it was also my
favourite. There was so much you could do to the basic set to improve it
without radically changing its functionality; you could easily motorise it,
lengthen the boom, put it on a proper truck... The mechanics and building
in it were very also elegant I thought, and as well as that it was great to
play with, not least in the scientific "pile on the load until the crane
tips over" way. Something that gave me a buzz was replacing the blue beams
on the telescopic extension with black ones "like a proper crane"; it is
weird what amused you back then :-)

I think in this sense it fits your criteria well Fredrik, it was
complicated enough to be an inspiration but simple enough to encourage you
to modify bits and also use them in your own creations.

Another set I thought was great back then was the 852 Helicopter, the
mechanism for tilting the blades was a work of genius.
