Because it might actually be impolite! :)
(Matthew didn't say that it was -always- impolte.)
I can think of a several cases where it would be (IMHO) impolite to the owner
of the site:
1. Where the site specifically asks for it not to occur.
(Very impolite to deep-link in this case.)
2. Where the site uses frames, and deep linking makes it harder for the user
to experience the site as it was intended, once they're done with that
page, for better or for worse.
(Slightly impolite to deep-link in this case. Less impolite if you also
give the user a top-level link.)
3. The case BenR mentioned in another post -- where someone has "click Agree"
pages. If these are static HTML pages, these are easily bypassed, but I'm
sure the author (albeit perhaps naive) of those webpages didn't intend for
people to deep-link.
(Incredibly impolite to deep-link in this case.)
4. Where the website you're linking to has a splash page with a "click to
Enter" screen.
(Very impolite to deep-link in this case.)
Again, only IMHO. :)

I find it helpful as a user of that page with links, but that's a completely
separate issue. By deep-linking, you're being more polite to the user while
possibly being less polite to the owner of the site you're deep-linking into.
