G/S has been out in japanese for a few weeks, and has been widely
played by all sorts of pokemon geeks who don't know a word of
japanese..

In the Japanese, there's red and green which came out first and were
released in English as red and blue (for some reason). Then there was
a japanese blue version which was never translated, then there's the
yellow version which is essentially the same as the old ones except
you always start with Pikachu instead of Charmander or Squirtle or
Bulbasaur. Then came the Gold and Silver games which have ~270 or so
different pokemon vs 150 in the original games.
There's also for the gameboy a pokemon pinball game, and IIRC one
other.
There's N64 Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 (2 being the english number 1), the
japanese 3 is well under way, and there's Pokemon Arena for the N64
IIRC.
And I agree with you that it could be a long while before pokemon
really dies. Seen "Super Smash Bros"? Donkey Kong, Mario, Pikachu, and
<whatever> for, essentially, Platform Deathmatch.
