Wow, that's amazing. did this happen a long time ago (the Florida trip) or was
it recent?

ok, I have to confess my two greatest finds.  It was when we were first
starting collecting lego sets.  The first find was *three* unitron monorails
for $100 each at a TRU in kentucky.  I thought we would never eclipse that
one, but we did.  On a driving trip to florida, we went through a small town
in the south with a k-mart.  It was 30 minutes before closing.  The kids were
asleep so I went in alone with lynn and the kids in the car.  I was in there
for quite a while.  They locked the doors.  Lights were turning off.  Lynn was
seconds from waking up the kids and going in after me.  Then I emerged with
the find.  The toy department was the worst I had ever seen.  Lego sets were
scattered across four of the six isles.  Nothing was organized.  Things were
on the floor, sideways, and hanging off the shelf.  There were open coke cans,
half consumed and sticky, mixed in with the toys.  It took quite a lot of
digging.  I don't remember the exact quantities, but here's a brief list of
what I got:

nine renegade runners
five or so cabin cruisers
half a dozen shuttle transcon 2s and numerous smaller launch command sets
pizza to gos
hook n ladders
countless paradisa sets including a couple poolside paradises
dragon masters sets
a sea serpent
dozens of other sets that had been discontinued for a few years.  Some I had
never seen before.

I filled two shopping carts full.  Less than half of the items scanned.  The
cashier was guessing at prices, holding up two sets similar in piece count and
assuming that they were the same price.  Nearly all of it was on clearance.
It was about $1000 and the register receipt was two feet long.  I put
everything in the trunk and continued on to florida.  I told lynn about
everything I had left behind and she yelled at me for not buying it.  So on
the way back, we drove back to the k-mart and finished it off.  Two more
shopping carts full.  This time, it was in the middle of the day and they were
busy.  So I approached a manager type person and explained the situation.  I
said that I had two carts full of items that won't scan and if I get into line
with it, there will be a lot of people mad at me.  So she opened a register
just for me (in the sporting goods department) and we went through the carts.

All in all, we spent about $2500.  In order to fit it all in the trunk, I had
to carfully position boxes to maximize trunk space while not crushing boxes
and avoiding the hinges on the trunk lid.  I'd filled shopping carts before,
but this was our best/worst yet.  We kept some, sold some.  Out set auction
helped to offset a lot of the cost.  I doubt we'll ever spend that much at
once again.  Most of the really good old sets have been bought or dumped by
now.

You're not really on a lego buying binge until the credit card company calls
and asks if everything's ok.  :-D

"I went to Orlando for a conference and spent $750 at the Lego Imagination
Center, then went to Fresno to help Mike Poindexter build train tables and
bought $462 worth of Lego from him, and $200 from a Shell Station, then I • came
home and spent $560 on eBay on Technic lots from Britain and $250 on the Lego
paddlewheeler, and then placed a $100 order from the eToys half-off sale
and a $200 order from the Legoland tent sale.
