I still object to the spooling method... It doesn't really seem in the spirit of
'climbing' a rope. Besides that, all you have to do is grab and then gear it
down enough to lift... whereas if we eliminate that option then there might be
some really interesting accordian or hand-over-hand bots. Hmm...

(...) I think "spooling" would be quite difficult. First, grabbing on to the rope is not a trivial task. Second, the more you gear the "spool" down, the more counterweight you need to deal with the "gerbil effect", meaning you want the spool to turn (...)
