michael, I do agree that I would like to see interesting hand over hand robots.... but
I learned my lesson with monkey bars.

by excluding solutions we would never get to see the "other" side of creativity.

I think "spooling" would be quite difficult. First, grabbing on to the rope is
not a trivial task. Second, the more you gear the "spool" down, the more
counterweight you need to deal with the "gerbil effect", meaning you want the
spool to turn and not your entire robot.

rob is correct.  spooling will have its own detractors.  starting with that fact that
the rope is 1/4 INCH, and to spool 12 FEET of the stuff, you would end up with a big
ball of rope around your axle (or whatever)

Anyway, we never single out a particular strategy and say its not allowed. I
guess Chris would have liked to outlaw my monkey bars robot because it didn't
look like a monkey, but oh well...

true, BUT i also have to accept that in the end we saw a very cool robot.

Personally, I like this game. Nice and easy for a change. I have some ideas
churning in my brain already. Battery box programming here we come.

One observations about the rules: The lower tape mark is a great idea, but maybe
it should be lower or there should be more room above it? The reason being is
that your robot will have to extend past 12" in order to grab the rope. Unless
there is more than a foot of space above the lower tape mark, the robot would
have to retract again. Probably an unnecesary restriction.

Rob

at first what you said made some sense. then the more i thought about it, I realized
that the upper 12' mark will not be a hard stop.  that mean that your robot can over
run the 12' mark, and still be higher than the lower 11' mark.

you should not need to contract your robot again.

Chris
There's no 'I' in 'team'.  There's four in 'platitude-quoting idiot'.
