I would argue that NWN is about as close to a true RPG as has yet been done
on a PC... it is a pretty accurate embodiment of the AD&D 3 rules, it allows
for a specific dungeon master role, you are quite concerned with character
advancement, (and have to watch out for alignment changes if you act out of
character)... your interaction with NPCs can be either scripted in advance
or controlled by the DM, and you can play multiplayer parties, in fact
that's what the game is targeted for... allowing you to RPG without needing
to all be in the same room.
What I was most taken with about NWN is how rich the adventure building
(Aurora) toolset is and how many high quality adventures have been built
with it already.
What parts do you see it lacking (making it a simulation of an RPG?)
In general though I agree with you, games are what you make of them...

I go the extra step and actually develop a character history and try to role-play it (e.g. my Half-Orc Monk grew up being discriminated against, so now (...) Your term, Interactive Fiction is a nice one, possibly a broad catagory that includes many other sub-types of games. Role Playing Games traditionally are those that (...)
