Both property rights and morality are only meaningful in a social setting. A
human being alone in the universe has need for neither. I'd suggest that
some animals with developed social structures could have something like
moral structures. If they wanted to develop a more complex society, it might
be useful for them to develop property rights as well.

As James points out, reason is only one of the tools we have. For example,
we also have opposable thumbs, which are very handy for picking up things to
eat.
