Allister,
I usually lurk, but the original post coupled with the recent trends out here
begged for a satire.

Chris,
The comment about ‘self censorship’ wasn’t directed at anyone in particular.
It’s between you and your conscience what you post - nothing to do with me.
However I did spot the satire, and enjoyed it, even allowing for the somewhat
hackneyed use of the change-someone-else’s-words-slightly device ;). It may pass
somewhat unoticed here unless, as you have done, it gets pointed out explicitly.
This is the sort of thing that really belongs on

Ordinarily I wouldn’t have even bothered writing anything in the first place,
but this quiet crusade to make LUGNET as child-safe as a DUPLO block is
starting to feel like a slippery slope. First it’s an easy target like a
flying swastika; now it’s life-size weapons, which I’d never even seen until
Ondrew dug them up. If weapons are so horrible, it’s only a jump in scale
before someone suggests knocking .military off the group list.
|
There’s nothing quiet about it, but to be fair, making lugnet ‘child-safe’ is a
stated goal of the TOS, and we are behooved to comply. How different people
interpret this is usually where the conflict arises. For me, a picture of a gun,
let alone a lego one, is not offensive, nor dangerous to show to children. A
picture of someone getting shot is a different matter.
Jlug has no such encumbrance, if that’s
more to your tastes.

I guess I’m just getting tired of how negative this place has gotten lately.
I have my share of negative opinions, of course, but I exercise some of that
fabled self-restraint to avoid pointlessly annoying people.
|
Any negativity is purely a result of people posting messages, so the ultimate
responsibility is ours to bring about a more positive atmosphere. Try to think
of any perceived negativity as an Opportunity For Satire, and let the positivity
flow. Again, prodding at the Lego community seems to be popular over at
Jlug, if that happens to be your bag.
Carry on,
Allister
