Allister,
I usually lurk, but the original post coupled with the recent trends out here
begged for a satire. Of course there are holes in this position, the same holes
Ondrews original has; lets count them.
1) If I truly dont want to create a fuss, then why am I posting in the first
place?
2) What ideals does LEGO stand for, anyway? The freedom to build anything you
want given sufficient pieces? The ability to randomly combine BURPs and Harry
Potter staircases until it gets boring? Or merely the gradual collapse of a
stated commitment to non-violent toys, one product cycle at a time?
3) Why drag Nazism into an apparently non-ideological issue? Every time Ive
seen it done online, its a blatant piece of melodrama.
4) If the posts in question conjure up such disturbing emotions, why am I even
looking at them?
5) Is the last lines resort to an improbable extreme another attempt at
melodrama or a diversion from the weaknesses of the primary argument?
Ordinarily I wouldnt have even bothered writing anything in the first place,
but this quiet crusade to make LUGNET as child-safe as a DUPLO block is starting
to feel like a slippery slope. First its an easy target like a flying
swastika; now its life-size weapons, which Id never even seen until Ondrew dug
them up. If weapons are so horrible, its only a jump in scale before someone
suggests knocking .military off the group list.
I guess Im just getting tired of how negative this place has gotten lately. I
have my share of negative opinions, of course, but I exercise some of that
fabled self-restraint to avoid pointlessly annoying people. For example, Id
gladly can Bionicle (no pun intended) if it meant Town would be more than a
juniorized construction crew each year building yet another police station, but
I dont link Bionicle MOCs to cluck my tongue at them. I wish the heads of TLG
had the courage to drop the good-while-it-lasted Star Wars license and resurrect
Space instead of adding a hundred pieces to a B-wing, but I dont call them
jackbooted thugs for not doing so.
