Thats an interesting separate question: do atheists, by and large, *want* a
God to exist? Do they wish God *did* exist?

Fundamentally, I prefer the way things are : God doesnt exist, so Im free.
Free of being good for myself and others, not because some Gog decides thats
the way to go.
However, Im not the only human on Earth. I cannot decide for others. So Id
probably prefer a God to exist so others, not as good as me (hey, Im no rapist
nor killer) wouldnt commit some horrible crime because if they did, God would
punish them right there and then. I know the vast majority of people is good,
but God should exist only to make sure the ones that arent good cant harm
others.
Thats the way I see things. It wont add much to a debate, but its my answer
to your question. I guess that if God did exist, I would get some benefit out
of it too. I could ask him why oh why did you let LEGO change the gray to blay?
