Dan did a very good job at answering that first question - killing versus
murder.  There is indeed a very real difference between the two, Biblically
speaking.

I am not Jewish, but as a Christian with a decent amount of Biblical knowledge I
feel I can answer your further questions below (with some Christian slant, of
course).  Christianities roots are in Judiasm and a good knowledge of Jews and
the old testament history of Isreal is essential to understanding who Jesus is
and what he came to do.  After all, Jesus was in fact a Jew:

Is there a specific reason why Yawheh wanted all those people dead?

Had they committed a sin against him that the Bible mentions somewhere else in
the story? Or perhaps just simply occupying Israel's future "promised land" is
sin enough?

Yes, there is a specific reason why Yawheh wanted all those people dead, and it
is spelled out in other parts of the story and in other parts of the Bible.  To
summarize, the various kingdoms of that lived in Canaan before the Isrealites
got there with Joshua were very evil.  They worshipped many different false gods
and idols, not Yawheh.  They were deeply involved in many other abominations
against Yawheh including incest, sexual affairs, homosexuality, beastiality and
human sacrifice (Leviticus 18).  Some other specifics mentioned of their wrongs
include adultery, turning to mediums and spiritists, and dishonoring parents
(Leviticus 20).

Yawheh (the true and only God) wanted his special people, the Isrealites (the
Jews) to be a shining light to the whole world of who Yawheh is, what it means
to worship Yawheh and the blessings that come from following Yawheh.  To prep
things he first set aside and formed up the Jews to become a nation by slavery
for 400 years in Egypt.  Then they were futher formed through wandering in the
desert for an additional 40 years where they relied totally on Yawheh for
everything, and where they recieved Yawheh's law (via Moses).

At the time of Joshua and the current new stories on The Brick Testament, Yawheh
(God) is moving his people into the promised land where the Canaanites are
already living.  Yawheh doesn't want His people to be at all corrupted by the
vileness of the inhabitants, and so the utter destruction is decreed.  Not only
that, the Bible makes clear that they had it comming to them whether the
Isrealites did it or not - they were that evil.

In the end, the Isrealites did not destroy all the Canaanites like Yawheh told
them to do.  The Canaanites did pull the Isrealites down from what Yawheh wanted
them to be.  Thus the Isrealites didn't end up being a light to the world of
what God is, until Jesus came and though his work grafted the rest of the world
into being "Children of Abraham", basicly Jews by adoption.  And I'm not even
going to go into how horrible so called "Christians" have been to Jews over the
past 2000 years - suffice to say it is the opposite of what Christians were
called to be.

Now to see for yourself:  Grab your Bible and see for yourself with these
selected readings on "the Canaanite Genocide":

Genesis 13:14-17  - Yawheh promises Abraham the land
Leviticus 18:1-28  - Sins of the Canaanites
Leviticus 20:1-24  - More sins of the Canaanites
Deuteronomy 7:1-11  - Why the Canaanites must be destroyed
Deuteronomy 9:4-6  - Canaanites destroyed only because they were wicked
Joshua 1:1-9  - Yawheh tells Joshua to take the land and follow Him
Joshua 23:12-13  - the danger of mingling with remaining Canaanites
Judges 1 - not all Canaanites were destroyed
Judges 2:1-3 - the results of that
1 Kings 11:4 - much later Solomon, King of Isreal, led astray...
2 Kings 16:3-4  - a typical example of a King following Canaanite's ways
And to really see how bad things got, take a gander at Isaiah or Jeremiah!

Feel free to reply here or by email if you have questions or comments about
this.  The topic isn't Lego related any more, but that is what off-topic.debate
is for anyway!

BTW, Brendan, if you are tuning in still to this thread... Keep up the good work
on the Brick Testament - gotta love it, and hopefully someday you will be able
to fill in absolutely everything! :)

-Matt :)
