Think of it as evolution in action.

Please explain. I don't get the analogy.

Put it another way: Stupidity is self correcting, in the long run.

A clever idea, but a common misconception: after tens of thousands of years
of people existing, most of us are still pretty stupid - at least some of
the time (hey, I persist in posting to o-t.d!).

The long run must be pretty long indeed!

Actually, I'd say we're pretty smart.

Probably true. But Larry's assertion was that stupid people getting
themselves killed was 'evolution in action'.

Assuming that when Larry says 'evolution' he means 'evolution [of something]
through natural selection', I see no evidence that backs this up. Sure
stupid people get killed, but so do smart people.

After thousands of years of stupid people getting themselves killed, there
are still plenty being born in recent times.

Are stupid people more likely to get killed? Maybe... but does this have a
noticeable effect on the stupidity of the next generation? It might... but
I'd love to see the evidence!

In reality, I think the average
person doesn't have much care for most of what goes on in the world
because it simply doesn't really effect them (see my earlier discussion
on the total impact to me personally from 9-11, and then remember that
most people saw LESS impact than I did). I'm not sure that it's really
all that dumb to not want to stick your nose into politics and such.

I'm pretty sure it's pretty stupid to stick your nose into politics and such
in fora which have negligible - if any - impact on those politics and such.

Now there is a danger to complacency, which was demonstrated in Germany
and Japan, and sure, the average person in Germany or Japan (probably
less so in Japan) was far more affected by World War II than I was by
9-11, but still probably not nearly as much as you might think.

Yes! Had there been .off-topic.debate then, things might have turned out
differently. ;-)

Cheers

Richie
