Now on this we completely agree--this very discussion has caused much
consternation between myself and my SO--I say we're not in space enuf, she
wants to see us take care of *everything* here before we even think about
getting into space.

well, look at it from a resources point of view.  a colony in space or on
another planet would cost trillions, and yet people are starving to death here
on earth.  What can a space colony do that would make such an expediture
worthwhile?  I'm not trying to say scrap the whole space program until we solve
all social woes, just why spread our bad management (eg. feeding, housing
everyone) abilites off our planet?

And about the asteroid thing.. there's this Canadian film about the end of the
world, and it follows this guy's exploits on that day.  It shows everyone
acting really mature, and relatively calm. There was even a guy who stayed at
the electric company to make sure everyone still had power.

I've never liked the implications of saying "if people knew the world would
end, there would be pure chaos."  it says that if given the choice, and being
free from consequences, people would rather be violent and hedonistic.  i think
most people i know would rather be with their families, or doing something fun.

Not telling people when you knew the end of the world was coming, I think
that's cruel.  People deserve a chance to do something before the end.. seeing
their families one last time, doing that one thing they've always wanted to do,
saying screw it to a job they've hated by did just to pay the bills.  I'd be
pretty miffed if i continued to work at a horrible job when my elected leader
withheld the end of the world timetable.

ps. i'm not trying to start any big discussion about space exploration vs.
social work on earth.. just thought it might do to say..
