When did this "huge step" take place? I've got a poor grasp of LEGO history,
but if you want sets with slightly implicit violence, this "trend" has been
going on for at least decades (western theme, with cowboys & indians, guns, bows
and arrows, etc., in 1996). I know that my old Galaxy Explorer (70's) had a
front-mounted laser on it (and oh yes, did I blow things up with that... not to
mention the mass-destruction capabilities of the 462 Rocket Launcher, '78).
Personally, I think the lowest point of this is that the media has focused on
LEGO, with a tradition of non-violence (or at least strictly limited violent
content) that is well-known (at least within the community). The opinions of the
group in question (via some quick Googling) seem rather conservative at least,
and I question what if anything they found that was good.

The only complaint I had with Bionicle was the more limited outlets for
creativity, certainly not the "violent content". I certainly don't see this as a
"change".
