That would be a good trick. My understanding is that since it's
dynamically generated content using a hybrid of HTML and Perl that Todd
invented, it would be hard to put on a CD statically and still have the
search work. one could, perhaps, write a crawlerbot that methodically
referenced LUGNET with each possible set number, then evaluated the
returned results to cache local copies of the ones that were valid, but
you would have to handle duplicate set numbers and you would lose things
like this:

http://www.lugnet.com/pause/search/?query=train

The other alternative is to have the CD contain an implementation of
Todd's interpreter and all the executables, etc, but I don't see that
happening either.

We have a very low truck factor(1)... 1.2 perhaps given the tarballs (2)

1 - truck factor is consultant slang for how vulnerable you are to
disaster. It's rather morbid humor, really. A truck factor of 3 on a
large project means that for any task the project has to do, at least 2
backups other than the primary person are capable of carrying on.

2 - I and Mike S. have tarballs of Todd's stuff, a bit backlevel, but no
prayer of actually carrying on in the event of a disaster, we have no
idea what Todd's stuff does. So try not to step out in front of any
trucks, eh Todd? (3) We like you too much.

3 - That's actually general advice... Recast: have YOU, dear reader,
made plans for what your family would need to do in case of your
untimely demise? I haven't. Shame on me. Be smarter than me, eh? Make a
will, leave an inventory and written instructions on how your family can
recoup some of your investment should they choose not to retain it.

While some happy AFOL may rejoice if he buys your entire collection for
1000 because your family doesn't know better, wouldn't you rather they
got a fair price for it?

The LUGNet set search would be a much much better CD to have. The amount of
times I connect to the web to access this is scary... having it on CD would

(...) Doesn't this mean that one would have to actually tell one's family how much one spends on LEGO? I can see that some may think that their family is better off not knowing this. :-) Fredrik (25 years ago, 17-Aug-99, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)
