20 mins? that's nothing!  When I went during lunch to a local Big W store on toy
sale opening week, I almost fainted when I saw this HUGE line of trolleys... 76
to be exact! one lady who was around the 30th trolley in line said she had been
waiting for 4 hours!!!

My wife any myself braved one of these opening sales last year at a local
K-mart. Arriving 30 minutes before the store even opened and had to queue at the
door to get in. The astute shoppers had already collected empty trolleys (some
with multiple) to rush to get what they wanted. Luckily for me my wife had
staked out the store the previous day just before closing and knew where they
were displaying each of the things we wanted.

After spending 10 minutes grabbing what we wanted (I got run over by a guy on
crutches on the way to the Lego aisle and was delayed) we headed to the layby
queue. In the 10 minutes or so the store had been open there were was a very
long queue at the Layby counter - again many people with multiple trolleys.
Deciding it was too much we headed to the front of the store to just pay for it
all. Was not much better - they had all registers open and there was 10 or so
people in each queue.

Standing in line we were talking to other parents who were also astounded at the
number of people. They were also surprised at the amount of Lego we were buying
our three year old son. My wife then explained how it wasnt for her son - it was
for her other child (me her husband).

Anyway this year we went a few days after the sales opened to see what was left.
I was interested in the new Kingdom Knights sets at Target this year. The prices
did not seem great so decided to wait until K-mart has a 20% off everything sale
and grab some then. Funny enough K-mart had extended their sale and had got
Kingdown Knights stock in during the sale and was selling some of it (the bigger
sets at least) at 20% off - so on X-mas layby they went.

Did anyone managed to get a Millenium Falcon? I tried at various K-marts (as
they had it in their catalogue) and was told 'they had sold out' - though my
suspicion is that was staff speak for 'I have no idea what you are talking about
about, but as they are not on the shelf we must have sold them all'. Was also
told 'more stock coming soon, may be some in there'. Also tried the raincheck,
but was told they could not by rainchecked. Just curious whether any of them
actually arrived in Brisbane stores? If so I presume they vanished very quickly.

(...) Dunno about Brisbane, but my local K-mart (Chadstone VIC) didn't have them the first day - I went back a couple of days later and they had some. ROSCO (20 years ago, 24-Jul-04, to lugnet.loc.au)
