OK, first of all thanks to everybody who responded to my original post. The
discussion was extremely helpful, and gave an interesting look into how a lot
of you build larger structures.
After various considerations, I think the Technic-peg connected halves, rather
than the hinged halves, may be an interesting 4th option to go with. I've had
problems using magnets to connect larger modules before, so I won't be
considering that for this structure, although my smaller barracks may use this
idea to separate the two storeys.
My inn will be using the 'jigsaw' method (pointed out by Rick, I believe), i.e.
tiles on top of the lower level around an x by y shape, with the base of the
upper level having an x by y plate attached underneath it.
Back to the main castle, however... the plan at the moment is to have a lowest
level of the mountain containing a cave for my black dragon, and possibly a
treasure vault or an entrance to the harbour. Next level up will contain two
cells/dungeons, and a couple of torture-chamber type contraptions. Bottom level
of the castle will have a throne-room and meeting chamber combined, with a
trapdoor in front of the King's throne leading down to one of the cells. Next
floor is the royal bedroom, and a balcony to overlook the gathered peasants in
the village. Top floor will be a semi-open rampart affair, with a bell-tower
and probably a catapulty contraption too.
I'm guessing that the base area will be at least around 32x32 studs (depending
on how many of my baseplates are taken up by the rest of the village), with a
height of (quick mental calculation) around 35 bricks at its highest point.
Hopefully, I'm getting either a digital camera or a scanner over Xmas, but the
chances of making any headway in just 3 weeks is slim - any photos will
probably not be up to view till Easter.
Thanks again for the tips and hints.

  Castle structure advice...

Over the Xmas holidays, I'm hoping to start work on my medieval village. The cornerstone of this village will be a big castle (around 3 storeys) on a mountain of BURPS around 2 storeys high. My quandary for which I seek seasoned castle-builders' (...) (25 years ago, 2-Dec-99, to lugnet.castle)
