This is more of an issue with POV-Ray.  It has everything to do with Macintosh
Meta data.  l3p creates files with no meta data.  If you type:

/Developer/Tools/GetFileInfo -c /path/to/.pov
/Developer/Tools/GetFileInfo -t /path/to/.pov

You get:

""

Which means l3p is not setting the creator or type stuff.  What is really going
on is that POV-Ray will NOT open a file that does not have the type set to
"TEXT".  If you set the creator to "POV3", then double clicking the document
will actually open it with POV-Ray.

Lars would have to add code that changes the meta data.  But I think we should
bug POV-Ray to change their app to read files with no type or creator data.  I
am kinda spending all of my free time split between trying to learn Andrew's
Ldraw Viewer, getting an installer for Travis Cobb's LDView available, one of
these days I need to update mac.ldraw.org, etc etc etc.  I wouldn't mind some
non programmer to help me bug people...

Anyway, I am also planning on writing a GUI wrapper for l3p just like I did for
ldglite.  I plan on using Cocoa though.  I already have a progect that will run
NSTasks, I just need to learn the Cocoa AppKit framework GUI commands.  I will
try to have a version out soon that will set the type and creator to POV-Ray.

Could l3p be changed to output the file in a slightly more convenient

Sure, if you tell me what exactly what you want...

Well, I don't really know. As I said, James said to do this at the
command line

/Developer/Tools/SetFile -c "POV3" -t "TEXT" /Users/yourname/yourfile.pov

and after doing that, the POV-Ray programs processed the files normally.

I don't know why POV-Ray would ignore the original file but process the
file that simply had its creator and type changed. I am guessing that
POV-Ray is set to only process text files, so if POV-Ray doesn't
recognize the file as a text file then POV-Ray ignores the file (POV-Ray
3.5 OS X version) or tells the user that it cannot process a non-text
files (POV-Ray 3.1 OS 9/Classic)/

Thanks for making an OS X release of l3p. Even if I have to write a
script to change the file type, it is still a lot better than having to
run l3p in Virtual PC.
