Wow, I want to laugh, but I'm embarrassed because their misunderstanding
was totally my fault.  *Of course* you can sign up for free posting privs by
clicking on the "Reply-To" link.  Posting is *only* free and you can't even
pay for it if you want to.  Oh my.

Ah, but you have to understand that most forums (and whether you think
of LUGNET as a forum or not, most newcomers are introduced to it via the web
archive, which reads like a more traditional form) require that you sign up
as a member prior to being able to click the "Reply-To" links, or
non-members get dumped to a sign-up page before being allowed to actually
post anything.  The confusion about membership is more of a problem for
those who try to sign up for membership _before_ trying to post, since they
hit the $10 sign-up fee, whereas those who try to post before signing up get
dumped to the non-member sign-up page.

I wonder...  Once people realized that Bionicle parts could be used in some
really cool ways in non-Bionicle models, did it gain more respect in the eyes
of those who had previously disdained it?

I'm sure some people figured it out pretty quickly (especially the
mecha-heads), and I expect a lot of other people came around over time, but
I can guarantee that there are some people here who still consider Bionicle
to be just as juvenile and un-MOC-worthy as Jack Stone.  My primary response
to that is my 24" long Dragon of Fire MOC:

http://www.maskofdestiny.com/archive.asp?i=754

This model uses the Throwbot hip-joint and head, the RoboRider head,
the Toa torso, eyepiece, and weapon arm, Tahu's flame-sword, Onua's claw,
Gali's hook, and the Bohrok eye, all in very non-traditional ways (okay,
I'll admit that my use of the claws, at least, is actually fairly in line
with their original usage).  Most of those ten pieces are considered to be
useless by those who deride Bionicle as being too juvenile, but I was able
to use them in new ways to create something with a fairly organic feel.  And
every single shape used to build this Dragon has been released in at least
one Bionicle set (though usually not in the colors I used), which should
prove that there's a lot of untapped potential there for those who are
willing to look for it.

I've seen a lot of really interesting MOCs that were entirely
Bionicle-based, or that used Bionicle pieces in a more traditional MOC (Jon
Palmer's M-Wing is my favorite, but I also remember a rather interesting
Ewok diorama that used a Kanohi as the head of some giant stone totem).

Still, there's a lot of work to be done if Bionicle is to get the same
amount of respect as any of the more traditional themes.  For now I'm happy
enough that those who don't like it are being a lot less vocal with their
opinions.  I know I can't ask that everyone start liking Bionicle, but I'd
rather not take any abuse just because I do.

(...) Ya, there seems to be a growing misunderstanding of what the word "member" and "membership" means on LUGNET. Back in '97 and '98, very few sites had "members" or "accounts" or even any kind of personal configuration. And a lot of people coming (...)
