The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Todd Lehman
(...) I may have screwed up badly on the name on this group -- and not fully understood how people might perceive it. It seems that no matter how it's described in its charter, people somehow still infer that it's for posting quotes. But it's NOT a (...)         Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Make this one moderated. You need to explore the mechanics of a moderated group anyway. Do it here where it's relatively less likely to be controversial. Get someone to moderate it for you. Seems to me that unless someone else thinks that it (...) (25 years ago, 4-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Larry Pieniazek
I was serious about this. Make it moderated. I'm disappointed that not one person even said "what a lame idea"... :-) (...) (25 years ago, 5-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Tom McDonald
(...) It might have something to do with the fact that you're not wrong (this time ;) Yet after reading Todd's admonitions, I decided to see if I could come up with a legal .QOTD from recent lugnet posts. Nothing struck me. Funny things are (...) (25 years ago, 5-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Mike Stanley
     (...) I thought the lameness of the idea was self-evident. :) (25 years ago, 6-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Really? Why? Do tell. Seems a natural for a moderated group. And we need to experiment with them here anyway. Heck, I volunteer to moderate it (for 6 months, no more). (25 years ago, 6-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Todd Lehman
(...) Hey Lar, You -do- know what's involved in moderating, right? You get mailed an NNTP article via SMTP, which you then import into an editor, munge the headers, add an 'Approved-By' header, and then repost via NNTP. There are tools to help with (...)           Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Larry Pieniazek
(...) Yes. Long term you will probably provide an interface for members to do this easily. Till then, no problem. I'll have my lar@voyager.net account receive these. Munging the headers should not be a problem from there. It would be hard to do (...) (25 years ago, 6-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Todd Lehman
(...) There's another icky sticky problem with moderated groups. When you post to one, your message disappears into the wild blue yonder. You don't find out whether your post made it there or not until you either see it minutes/ hours/days later or (...) (25 years ago, 7-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Ed Jones
(...) I agree. Considering that this is supposed to be fun, I think too many people are making this way to cerebral!!! Its beginning to look a whole lot like the dreaded LEGO/LEGOS threads. (25 years ago, 7-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Larry Pieniazek
Kill QOTD, I don't care, it's the easiest solution. It's not a high value add group anyway. But I do think we need to explore the mechanics and technology of moderation as a community experiment. Moderation (or review of information) will appear (...)         Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —James Brown
(...) I think it is a naming thing. When I first see "QOTD" it interprets as "somewhere to put cool quotes I heard" without any accompanying "on LUGnet or RTL" being intuited by my brain. I think that what you may want to do, even though it goes (...) (25 years ago, 4-May-99, to lugnet.admin.general)

Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Jeremy H. Sproat

(...) I?) that when you had us look at that "mystery" page that that's what you were doing.           Re: Charters —Todd Lehman
(...) Well, the longer listing won't be going away with this new layout -- this is just the 'homepage' for the group and it gives a short intro, and you'll still be able to get to the full (compact) listings from there.         Re: The name/purpose of the QOTD group —Mike Stanley
