Glad you came out okay!

Ditto!

Time for some car shopping.  I can see you in a huge SUV with no handling,
little stopping power, and poor rollover incidence *but* high pirate ship
hauling ability by the way...

Nah, I don't do SUVs. Full sized vans maybe. I am giving serious consideration
to a station wagon though (I had just about settled on a Saturn wagon [the
small one, not the new large one, that one's a bit more than I want to spend,
though it looks like it has good potential] until I read today's consumer
reports which almost totally panned the Saturn [though they were looking at
sedans not wagons]).

Well, since you mentioned station wagons, I have to put my two cents in!  I drive
a Volvo 240 DL wagon and I love it!  It holds tons of LEGO (you should have seen
what I packed into it during Target's January clearance!), still gets 24-26 mpg
(my NLSO can make it get 28-30),  doesn't really look old (they all look pretty
much alike), and is still going strong at over 267,000 miles.  It is also a frugal
choice if you do what we do and buy a used one (3-5 years old) and drive it for a
while.  I was going to replace it with an 850 wagon when it reached 200,000 miles,
but it ran perfectly fine, so there was no reason to.  Now I'll think about a
newer one again at 300,000 miles.

Of course, the drawbacks are that if you are not married with kids I can't imagine
why you would want to drive one.  Also, Ford has taken over the Volvo car
division, so I don't know if that has affected the quality.  And parts tend to be
expensive.
