I am starting a list of local users group and clubs. I want it to be as
complete as possible and for the history books (and, aw heck, for charts and
graphs someday) I'd like to include the official dates of formation of each
group/club.
As a first approximation, I checked in the newsgroups for the first mention
(i.e., the earliest reference) to each name. This pegs the order of formation
pretty solidly, I think, and in some cases pegs the official formation dates
fairly closely, but for a couple of the more established groups (PNLTC for
example), the dates are probably off significantly.
Date format is yyyy/mm/dd:

What date are you looking for here?
If you're looking for the date the 'club' started displaying LEGO trains at
shows, it would be sometime in the mid 1980s. When most of the group started
getting together? 1993. When we started having any sort of 'web' presence?
Maybe 1998, or maybe your 1999/03/05 date...
The GMLTC has been called 'the most informal club' because we don't have dues,
or a charter, or even a roster. We just get together and build. We're not big
into self promotion, we prefer to let our layout impress people.
Of course our layout is currently being taken apart, so it's only impressive
when you see four or five 32quart containers filled with one color of 2x4
bricks. Yea, we have a lot of bricks to play with! And lots of plans for the
next layout... <grin>

I guess what I'm looking for is the exact date on which GMLTC started calling
itself GMLTC (i.e., that it became that entity, however informally) and also,
if known, the date on which people in the Twin Cities (those who initially
founded GMLTC) started congregating and saying, "Hey, we should make a thing
of this."
Sounds like the history of GMLTC would make a very interesting book. :-)

I think NALUG "technically" started about a week before this date, but the date
can/should stand as is - the official announcement on Lugnet being about the
best indicator. :)

Why exactly? (both senses...) That is, exactly why do you need to know this,
and why does it have to be exact? Would the year be good enough? GMLTC started
from one guy and his uncle who loved LEGO and grew from there. It's the
granddaddy of all LEGO train clubs, leave it at that. Not dissing PNLTC, they
were a clear second historically, and more organised sooner, but they are two
different beasts.
Like John G. said, most GMLTCers could care less (but not very much less)
about promotion, names, club structure, details, they just want to build. The
notable exceptions are John 8wide Neal and myself. We do it mostly for fun,
and I'm only an adjunct member, haven't been to a building session in almost a
year now. <sigh> It was in part 8wide that caused the club even to have a name
and a logo in the first place. That happend well before there was any
statements of club existance on RTL or LUGNET.
My 1.3 pence. (in the lounge at DTW awaiting my LGW flight to be called so
I'll think in Sterling, ok?)

1985 was the first year a layout was taken to a show. The other date is

That is probably much closer to your 3/5/1999 date - I think John Neal gets
the credit for actually giving the club a name.

As for an exact date, I'd use the date J-1 registered gmltc.org.

Nope. Can't take it. I had originally thought about the name "Upper Midwest LEGO
Train Club". J-1 had thought about "Greater Minnesota LEGO Train Club", and even
registered gmltc.org. There was a bit of disagreement, but then J-3 suggested
"Greater Midwest LEGO Train Club", and we could still use the domain name. So if
anyone gets credit, it would be John Kelly. The rest, as they say, is history.

I doesn't have to be exact if there isn't an exact date. I think in most
cases there are exact dates...it's just that I'd prefer to know exact dates
if at all possible. If not, that's OK too.

11.14.1998 works for me, I believe that was the date of the first public
presentation of the NGLTC layout back when it was the membership of one. But
it did soon grow to two members by the end of the show.
Before that it was just a layout in my garage with no official name.

I don't think I've ever more agreed with Larry <grin>
October 1992 or 1994 was when John G and I started to build with Conan and
Chuck. John G a little sooner than I, it was right about the time that Conan
came to work at the Lego Imagination Center and we met them. Since Conan
lived in a house with a few other guys, the gathering was informal, but
frequent.
(Year date is different because I don't remember if I was already married or
not. Oct 93 was in CT as a model builder, cuz that was the year I got
married.)

While 1999-07-16 is the first mention of the name NELUG I think we have decided
that 1999-08-10 is probably more appropriate for an anniversary date as that
was the date of our first meeting (Ideas coming together).

If at all possible, I wanna list what each group feels/defines is its official
birthdate. Date of first mention is a reasonable approximator, but just that.

I don't know the formation date for sure but I am pretty certain that PNLTC
was around when I first started hacking around with LEGO again in late 1997.

and what I tend to think of the "core three", Dan P, Steve B and Ben F, all
were part of the action, with structures built for the show. So they were
around at LEAST that far back, probably farther. IIRC the name and an older no

them and linked my website to them in december 1997. I still have that logo in
my links, guess I ought to switch.

I'd change this to something like "the minnesota gang gets prodded into
picking a name" or similar to reflect the informality, because the way it
reads now, it implies this is the formation date. It's not. It's more of a
formalization date than a formation date.

PNLTC 'organized' or, rather, met under the name in June 1997 so that
applications could be submitted for the Sept. and Oct. GATS venues. We also
started building tables at that time. Initial activity and pics were
graciously posted by Ben on his personal website.
Our first meeting was at Ben's place in Portland on a hot August Saturday.
Steve, Ben and I setup a small layout to test the dropped Kid's RailRoad (name
later adopted from Will Chapman) and a few special modules. Originally 3
members now almost 30. :)

This could be backed up to 2000-01-15, I have an e-mail from Mike Walsh
dated then where he reports securing www.nclug.net. Our discussion about
forming the group however extends back to 1999-08-06 or thereabouts,
here is a pointer to the first formal announcement on Lugnet of the
intent to form a group (it may even be worth having 2 dates in the
listing, but then maybe it doesn't really matter):

What is clear is that a huge wave of organizing started in the 2nd half

At this point, I'm inclined to say that there is no such thing as UKLUG,
beyond the web site put together by Simon Denscombe.
There is no evidence of any organisation, no officials, no constitution,
no T-shirts, no nothing.
I had hoped to get some sort of discussion going at yesterday's
gathering, but there were too many other distractions :-)
If anybody else thinks that we really should get something tangible off
the ground, please make yourselves known by responding to this post.
On the other hand, if you think that the way things are at the moment,
with a loose affiliation based around lugnet.loc.uk, is all we need,
please stand up and say that as well.
I'm definitely of the opinion that we need an events manager, though
;-)

The GFLTC was formed at the H&R Train Show (Sat, Oct 2, 1999) where I met
Dennis and Nick. We talk for an hour and decided to start the club.

In my little mind I'm a member of STUDS (capitalised, isn't an acronym, just
funny in a non-PC non-genderspecific in-joke kind of way) which is the Sydney
regional Lego Users Group (SLUG/SydLUG). Our bi-monthly gatherings are variously
STUDSfests (because they're our fests and we're members of STUDS) or Studfests
(because the bricks we play with have studs on them) -- I prefer STUDSfests.
SLUGS is a vaguely derogatory/self-deprecating term (depending on who says it)
that refers to the members of STUDS.

would say that is the date.

First ever face-to-face meeting. (...I'm hesitant to use the word
"official", though, in response to some spirited discussion quite
a while ago regarding which term to use: "members" vs. "attendees".
One of the more vigorously defended opinions -- by whom,
I no longer recall -- was that the term "members" would be too
formal and officious, so we agreed to stay informal and relaxed.
Just simple, laid-back Southern behavior. ;-)

I think it was a little before that - The first post to the Lugnet Sealug
group was on Aug 24, 2000. I would have thought that we met before we got
our official Lugnet group. Maybe in July?
