Larry, I think you overestimate the Israeli's "rule of law". Sitting here on the
other side of the world, that looks like the weak link.  I've always had canny

too.

Good ref. Pournelle can be a bit of a maunderer at times, a bit
militaristic, a bit high on himself, but he still has insight.

I take your point. Israel has definitely got themselves thinking that they
are the Chosen People who can do no wrong and that they are always on the
side of righteousness.

However I saw an interview this morning on the Beeb with the mayor of
Jerusalem that drove home my perception that the media have it in for
Israel, the presenter was asking the mayor "why do you fire on children" and
similar loaded questions, and then not letting the mayor finish explaining
how the hezbollah and the radical arms of the PLO deliberately use children
to incite trouble, knowing that the media watch and knowing that the snipers
and rocket grendade firing troops aren't as visible, and the Israelis come
off seeing more heavy handed than they are. (which is a feat because they
ARE heavy handed)... that presenter had made up his mind and wasn't going to
listen to what the mayor said, just wanted to score his points on the Israelis.

My feeling here, which I will repeat, is that the UK in particular, as the
proximate causers of this mess with their silly partitioning, ought to stay
out of calling names. Unless they want to stand up and take responsibility
for the messes they've caused, which as we've seen here, they're not willing
to, they dodge away and point fingers elsewhere (and can you blame them, so
does the US when the US is pointed out to not be perfect, but the UK with
their partitioning caused more messes than anybody this century other than
Stalin)

There is no easy answer to this, in an ideal world we'd hit rewind and do it
all over again, but there is no such thing. Both sides have hardened into
intractability.  I still stick to my assertion that Israel is a lighter
shade of gray than any of its neighbors (I never said white, never), but
they're all pretty dark.
