Hi everyone,
As you know, the bulk bricks online survey is now over. The results have
been submitted to the LEGO company for them to digest.
As many of you have expressed an interest in the results, Jake has given me
permission to publish a set of top 20 lists, which are now available on the
PaBTrak website.
You can see the top 20 most requested part/color combinations, the most
popular colors requested and the top 20 parts when the color is not
considered.
These results can be found at http://www.pabtrak.com
Jake also asked me to mention that the data collected here is absolutely
being used. That doesn't mean that every single thing will be implemented,
or implemented immediately. That said, he mentioned it is important to TLC
to try to include as much of our feedback as possible
Once again, thank you to everyone who took part in this survey.
Richard.

Thank you for posting the 'top 20' parts. A very interesting list, most of them
are basic bricks, plates or slopes.
Hopefully The LEGO Company will use this data to better understand the AFOL
market!
One more question, Richard: How many people submitted their lists?
Thanks!

The survey seems to say "bring back #5216 roof bricks and the red one, plus grey
2x2 tiles (alas)." Something we can agree on anyway. Only a few items stake out
new ground for bulk.
Or more colors of the mixed roof and tile packs we have now.

Hi John,
We had a total of 61497 part/color submissions from 839 unique users. This
means an average of 73 part/colors submitted per user.
It might have been a little more if we hadn't had the early problems with
the site, but I think everyone who wanted to vote eventually had an
opportunity to do so.
The next survey should go a lot smoother!
Hope it helps,
Richard.

Yeah, I have to say I really liked those roof packs. In retrospect I'm not sure
what the best approach to this survey was. When I was picking bricks, I tried to
make sure that I picked things I would order bunches of. But concave/convex
slopes certainly weren't on my list, though. Sure, I want them and all, but I
don't need slews of them. Just enough to tweak my buildings. If they were
available in a bulk pack with 25 per pack? I might order 2. But decent-colored
windows? A zillion. Tiles? A zillion. Leaves/Greenery? A zillion.
The trick with bulk (IMHO) is that some pieces work better in a "mixed bag",
like bricks and slopes. The old style roof packs and brick packs were totally
awesome. Each time I'd place a S@H order I'd consider buying more. Breaking them
down into individual parts, like 2x4 bricks specifically, makes me less likely
to buy them. IE, I'm more likely to say "Gee, I need more tan bricks" than I am
to say "Gee, I need more 1x4 tan bricks". Windows, bushes, trees, though? Great
in individual-piece-bulk.

I'm interested to hear peoples opinions on why 1x2 bricks are so high.
(As opposed to 1x4, 1x6 etc.). Personally I find the slightly longer
bricks more valuable.

Shoot - None of mine made it.
I put in a bunch of strange bricks, including odd windows, doors, and panels. I
guess everyone else wanted mainly basic bricks because that is what the survey
seems to show.

Keep in mind that I mostly build castle MOCs:
I prefer building castle walls with bricks rather than with the castle wall pieces. I try to avoid plain, flat walls, so I find 1x1, 1x2, 1x3, and 1x4 bricks the most useful. In such cases, there just aren't many "plain" areas large enough to fit 1x6 or larger bricks.
However, that doesn't mean I don't use the longer bricks. The longer bricks are
extremely useful for internal support in sculptures, or to support floors.
But my ideal collection would have many more small bricks than larger ones.

Any indication of how many people submitted surveys?
I'm really curious as to how large the sample size ended up being.

I completely agree with white, black, lt gray, and dk gray in the top 5. Kinda
wonder how red creeped in.
But the parts types results completely baffle me. For every 2x2 concave steep
slope and just about every item on the list, I use 100s of 2x4s. The list seems
to reflect demand based on scarcity, not demand based on usage. We better watch
what we wish for. After I buy 1000 2x2 lt gray tiles, Ill be set for life, but
Ill still be short 100,000 2x4s.

I agree that the results indicate a huge desire for roof bricks. However, if
the assorted roof brick packs are revived, I think TLG needs to re-think the
part assortment in those packs.
I managed to get 30 of the 5216 black roof bricks when they were available (and
10 of the red one). I used up the 2x4 slope and 2x2 convex slope VERY quickly,
but I was left with a ton of the 2x2 concave slope and most of the double slopes
(1x2, 2x2, and 2x4) at the end. I had to buy additional packs of just the 2x4
slopes.
I guess it's a bit of a slippery slope (no pun intended) when it comes to part
assortments. For small roofs (rooves?) the existing assortment isn't too bad,
but for large roofs you don't need very many 2x2 concaves or double slopes. TLG
should also remember to include the "1x2 triple" and "1x2 double/inverted"
slopes in all future assorted roof brick packs. Fortunately, I was able to
obtain these pieces in black from other sets.
And yes, I would love a larger colour selection for the 2x2 tiles!

What amazes me is that only 839 users participated. I expected a lot more,
something like 5000 or so. But then again, I cannot relate the 839 to anything,
I dont have a clue as to how it represents the AFOL community. (How big is the
AFOL community?) And as such, I cannot 'trust' the list.
The parts that I see, for instance the 1x1 and 1x2 bricks can be found in almost
any bucket. And lots of them too.
White and black 2x2 tiles can be bought at this very moment from S&H. So these
are not very 'sparse?'.
This is not meant as negative criticism towards you (John & Jake) :)
Question: Assuming that people enter the most wanted piece first, could you make
another top 20 list using that info? Or am I the only one that did that?

I think some of the surprise in the list may be due to peoples understanding of
the purpose of the survey.
Was it - pieces in addition to what S@H currently sell
or - pieces you need
I voted on the basis of already knowing what S@H sell and my selection went
toward what else they should sell.
I may have been wrong. I hope not, I dont want to trade my steady supply of
2x4s for a bunch of more esoteric stuff either!

This is probably because, out of 20 choices, one or more colors of 1x2 were
selected but no one particular color was outstanding. I put in tan, new brown,
new light gray, orange, and medium blue for most 1x2 and 1x4 - there are a lot
of colors not easy to get in tubs. Now if somebody voted for black 1x2 bricks,
thats a head-scratcher.
Windows feature prominently. I dont know what you have to complain about (you
didnt seriously think a majority of people could agree on a color for a train
door did you?)
For what its worth, nothing I picked made the top 20 part-color except new gray
1x2. I voted for a lot of fences and cylinders.

Maybe it's just me but I find some of the results of the survey very odd.
In particular, I am surprised that 1x1, 1x2, 1x4, and 2x4 bricks showed up
on the list. These are the sort of parts that just aren't that hard to come
by in quantity between what LEGO offers in tubs, buckets, bulk packs or from
BrickLink.
I also find it odd that no arches nor doors showed up on the results.
But a survey is a survey and everyone is allowed to express their opinion.
FWIW, I captured my submission as an Acrobat file and posted it on
BrickShelf. If you are curiuous to see what I voted for, here is the

Train elements topped my list too, and it's too bad you couldn't weight your
vote, because everything else I voted for would have been much lower on my
list. Various train windows & doors, town windows & doors, slopes, and some
plant elements were the majority of my voting submission. No basic bricks
that's for sure.

ya, except the weighting I'd prefer would be "put your customer number in, OK we
found how much you spent at S@H last year... that's what each of your votes is
worth" :-)
And I'd be Ok with the fact that my votes weren't worth the most. (Hi Troy!)

I have to agree with this one... the "put your money where your mouth is"

Besides other parts, I voted heavily on 1x2 and 1x4 bricks. Let me explain.
I would love to have basic bulk bricks available in some of the newer colors,
especially dark blue, dark red, dark green, dark tan and dark orange.
Since I wouldn't expect TLC to release all kinds of shapes of each of those
colors, and since I could pick only 20 shapes in the survey alltogether, I
primarily picked 1x2 bricks, because they are most versatile for both small and
large structures.
Also I was hoping other voters wanting new colors would focus on those basic
shapes. If the demand for the new colors was spread over many shapes, it would
not stand out.
So in conclusion, the high score of 1x1, 1x2 and 1x4 parts may be attributed to
a demand for certain new colors, which are not available in regular tubs.
This is also to show that it will require some insightful thinking by TLC to
translate the survey results into a bulk assortment that will sell well in
reality. Our discussion here of the results should contribute to such insight.

Please do not forget, Europeans pay completely different amounts of money
for their tubs.
In the US they practically give those tubs away, over here they don't :-(
So I voted for 1x2's in standard colors.
I don't need shapes bigger than 1x3 (due to my physical situation I don't
have that much strength in my hands so the bigger the brick the harder it
gets to stack them, but hey, that's my problem ;-) not yours)
I could buy tub 4107 (wich I love because of the many 1x2's and 1x1's) but
that'll cost me 39 euro's, that translates to 47 dollar something... and I
get a lot of bricks I rarely use.
I'd rather buy them in bulkpacks :-) And I know of the existence of
bricklink yes :-)
Everyone voted for the things they want, and it seems many people want
1x2's. And that's OK with me :-D

Thanks again, Richard & Jake.
I think the results show how diverse our individual needs (wants?) are.
For colors, I am surprised (and disappointed) dark red is not more prominent.
For parts, I don't understand why black tiles are listed. They are available
already. I am kind of viewing that as a lost item on the list. What was the 21st
most wanted item? Same with light bluish gray 1x2 bricks....I think they're
available in bulk as well. (not positive)
I am thrilled to see so many tiles on the list and happy we were given the
opportunity to make our choices known.

Looks like they already did :) Honestly, I had many problems with the survey, I
took it minutes after annoucement. my "shopping cart" got emptied a few times,
and when i finally submitted, I found out it only contained 1 item... 2x2
concave slopes....
They must have not only weighed my buying records (10's of K's), but also
weighed the fact that I only "wanted" one 1 item, and multiplie that with my
bricklink feedback :)
Seriously, the list looks good for town/castle, with slopes, tiles, bricks. As
others, I did take into account what was already available, so did not ask for
that. My real list included (but did not get submitted:
1x2x2, 1x2x3, 1x4x3 panels in Chrome-gold, Chrome-blue, Chrome-silver, and 7
trans colors (for office buildings)
1x4x3 windows, basic colors, and also the plain panes, shutters, and lattice
panes

I completely agree with white, black, lt gray, and dk gray in the top 5.
Kinda wonder how red creeped in.
But the parts types results completely baffle me. For every 2x2 concave steep
slope and just about every item on the list, I use 100s of 2x4s. The list
seems to reflect demand based on scarcity, not demand based on usage. We
better watch what we wish for. After I buy 1000 2x2 lt gray tiles, Ill be
set for life, but Ill still be short 100,000 2x4s.

100,000 2x4s, which train clubs would call a good start to building a
layout...
Yup. 2x4s in quantities (2500 bricks? 10,000 bricks?) would be awesome, and
wed buy em! Throw in the ability to buy 2x2 bricks, and wed have 90% of the
bricks we use on a train layout. Lets see, 10,000 2x4 bricks at maybe 4 cents
each is $400. Id buy 5 or 6 of those every year. Heck, the GMLTC has gone
through 10,000 2x4 bricks in just a couple of weeks of layout building.
My personal top choices: 1x2x2 classic town window.
Bricks: 1x1, 1x2, 1x4, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4.
Plates: 1x1, 1x2, 1x4, 1x8, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4, 2x8.
Leaf elements: 3x4, 6x5 (in several shades of green).
After these I put some more specialized elements like train windows and some
Technic elements. Give me basic bricks and plates!
I refused to list either the light blue-grey or dark blue-grey on any of my
selections though...

This is why I think this survey was flawed in its design. Some people went in
with the approach that they were voting for colors, while others concentrated on
parts. Because of this dichotomy, the results probably show neither the colors
most wanted nor the parts most wanted (especially). Unless by random chance,
the most wanted color and part matched.

And I think it would be nearly impossible to determine the actual wants from
this survey. To try would be a sloppy stab in the dark at best. I am very
disappointed in the results and this is coming from someone who had two of his
desired parts on the list (the mullioned window pane and macaroni brick). May I
suggest:
A "do-over"
This time, running two distinct parts of the survey: one for most wanted colors
and a separate one for most wanted parts. Also, eliminating some rare parts
from the survey that probably aren't realistic to produce would help focus the
desired part portion of the survey.
Also, although it is called a "bulk brick" survey, I think that term has to be
understood in the context of how TLC sells bulk packs. They are not selling
items in true bulk, but small part selections. I seriously doubt whether one
part would ever be sold in a quantity above 100. What is more likely, is a
parts pack type of "bulk offering" that they have done in the past. This may
also influence how people vote.
In short, if this is to be used as a tool to make a business decision by TLC, I
think TLC should go extra lengths to make sure it is a worthwhile tool that
accurately reflects people's true desires. As it stands, I have no confidence
in these results.

I pressed Jake on what criteria we should make our choices: What we use most,
most of the time or what we would like the most because we cant get them this
week? I also pointed out that I dont want bricks from LEGO that I can buy for
less on BrickLink (If the cheapest source of 2x4 bricks was TLC, than that would
be my top priority, but if the prices would be high, than I would give priority
to things I cant get elsewhere. Of course, I would love silver 2x4 plates, but
I would never buy 10,000 of them the way we do a lot of other bricks.).
Jakes reply was that he couldnt/wouldnt say.
In the end, because of the reports that the survey site wasnt working and
because I didnt understand the criteria, I didnt enter the survey.
(Actually 800+ responses strikes ME as a lot for this community. I more suspect
a lot of multiple voting to get to that total).

I similarly voted for 1x2 bricks, but in rare colors. I think part of this is
the nature of such a survey. Going across all themes, it is nearly impossible
for a speciallized piece to win through (except garage doors for some reason).
Even if all Space builders voted for a particular element, it won't get through
without votes from other themes. Basic bricks, plates, slopes, and tiles,
though, are generally useful. So even if a smaller proportion of space builders
voted for these, they'll still end up on top, because there will also be a
portion of train, castle, town, etc builders who want the same things.
I voted for mostly architectural elements--windows, doors, slopes, the
aforementioned 1x2 brick--because I thought these would be ultimately the most
useful thing to have available in bulk. I also spent a couple of votes on
speciallized castle elements, and I threw away one vote on a turkey, just
because I've always wanted one.

IMHO, I feel that they do figure prominently. 3 window/window related items out
of 20 is 15%. Compare this to the 20% that basic-bricks make up or the 10%
that plates make up, Id say that Windows made a fair showing. When examining
the results, I tried to keep in mind that this is a cross-section of the
communitys needs. Im surprised that the scales tip so heavily to specialized
items, such as the Windows and Garage Doors (See 1).
As to the 1 x 2 bricks versus 2 x 4 bricks debate, I voted for all 1x bricks,
as, in my constructions, I use few if any 2x bricks. Id chalk this one up to
just personal preference. Some folks like the stability of 2xs, some the
increased flexibility of 1xs. Personally, Id rather see 1xs than 2xs.
But, as for the windows, the numbers are good for windows and corresponding
elements. I didnt bother voting for mullions, because it stands to reason that
1 x 4 x 3 windows would include the crucial bits (just for the sake of the
mass-consumers market, not the AFOL who may have thousands of spare mullions
laying around). But, the fact that mullions are in the mix proves that the
windows are wanted, as the majority of folks threw two votes away on window
elements.
I think we should all just see where this data takes TLC. We really have no
clue, although we may take stabs, as to what they plan on doing with this data.
-John Rudy
1 I voted for the garage doors and corresponding elements just as Bruce
Hietbrink voted for the Turkey. I never expected the item to reach the top.

John-
Exactly!
I would have bought 10,000 2x4 bricks in light gray or dark gray at $0.04 each
in a split second. Survey respondents should have been asked how many they would
buy at a specified price. That would have made for much more useful (and Im
sure quite different) numbers. I think that after I bought enough slopes to
build a 25,000 brick model of the Luxor hotel/casino (its a pyramid) in Las
Vegas, that I would have exhausted my lifetime demand for slopes.

Having already built one 66 studs square, I can tell you it gets insanely expensive
after a while to make it larger ;-)
But yeah, I listed a clear tri-peak and clear corner slopes for just that reason,
for finishing the Luxor (yeah, I'd have lots of other uses for them too). What
hurts the most was seeing the corner slopes at BW03 in BillV's hands for a short
time, but not being the person to win them.

Agreed, but also WAY more plentiful already. My guess is most 1x2s were selected
in bleys and r-brown, which seems to be supported (if only slightly) by the
colour-specific list.
Anyway the top 20 doesn't really mean all that much - hopefully LEGO will do a
more in-depth analysis of the results before making any decisions.

I could post a reply elsewhere, but my comments cover more than one thing.
I am pleased to see the convace slopes as wanted, as someone wrote, the 5205
(?), anyway, selection of roof tiles would be great. There is a selection now,
but limited.
What I dont understand is that the top slopes (w/o studs) are all missing here
except for one?
As for windows, I support the lattice windows, even that I did not vote for
them, more the ones with rounded tops.
Then again - there are no doors here? I'd like to see that too, especially those
with rounded tops.
Tiles - yep, a selection of those. I do not understand the wished here, but for
snot and build with smooth surfaces - tiles are a need, in some sort of
selection.
Arches - where are they?
I think one should see this in a larger view. Windows also mean doors, some roof
tiles mean even more roof tiles (slopes), etc. For tiles the same, but I cannot
see arches in this theory.

Thank you for your reply in this thread since it explains my thoughts as well.
This survey was quite vague in what you were actually supposed to be
thinking about. Personally I picked parts that are rare but I would use in a lot
of projects and would interest others as well. The criteria used to choose parts
differed from person to person which basically gives you unclear results. All
that was needed was a short blurb stating please pick parts that you wish to
purchase bulk quantities of or please pick parts that you would like to use
but are rare or dont exist this would have given you much better results and
more usable information.
OnDrew
p.s. How did 1x1 tiles make it on to the list? They werent even an option when
I took the survey.
P.s.s. thank you Richard Morton for putting the survey site together. Even with
the vague instructions which I know werent your fault the site was very easy to
navigate and fun to use.

Richard/Jake,
I know there have been a lot of community related things happening lately, but
have any recent developements been made on this or the bulk program in general?
thanks in advance.

Im not sure if Ive posted about it, but the original bulk brick survey results
were integrated into the discussion of what palette of bricks LDD would have at
launch, and in the future, and how that was going to tie into LEGO Factory. I
know it was a bit of weird survey, considering you didnt know exactly how to
vote. But since LEGO Factory wasnt yet announced, we couldnt say much. And as
I mentioned at the time, I felt some amount of AFOL input into the process under
a cloud of secrecy was better than no input into the process at all.
So before I answer your specific question, Id like to take moment to reflect on
how far the bulk brick abilities came in 2004. Between the every growing
expansion of PaB, LEGO Factorys launch (and more importantly, future), LEGO
BrickMaster, special limited access orders for some clubs (with expansion
coming), spring cleaning tubs and sets, and of course the continuation of the
Designer sets, 2004 was pretty good for bulk.
So is there more coming? Ill let you guess at that one... :)
But while youre guessing, keep an eye out for an announcement of something fun
coming up sometime this month.
Im such a tease, arent I?
