The trials and tribulations of my latest adventure with one of my MOCs.
..... if you would rather skip the rambling...... the pics can be found
here
This past weekend I had the pleasure of participating in my first train show.
At one end of the display it was decided to have a kids area where they could
build. There was to be a small loop to run a train. I requested the middle
section of that track for a condensed version of a theme park, because I thought
that the kids would really get a kick out of seeing the rides.
When the park was nearly completed, my kids ask Are you going to get them
running soon?
ME? Get them running?? That will mean motors and bushes and gears... OH MY!!
I tell them gently but firmly The rides are not going to move... as looks of
disappointment cross their faces, I quickly realise, a fair that doesnt have
moving rides is just not going to cut it.
So with great amounts of guidance from my oldest son, I reluctantly agree to
motorized the ferris wheel. Surprisingly, once we get that one moving, I get
hooked, and together we work on getting the other 6 rides running.
Never having participated in a train show before this event, and never having to
move my MOC very far the idea of building modular didnt even enter my head.
Lessons learned...
A cumbersome size MOC with underdeveloped structure holding a top heavy design,
mixed with a 8 hour drive on a major freeway..... I *should* have known that
this can only spell disaster. Well sure enough, by the time I arrived in
Ottawa, the fair had taken quite a beating.
Then in a moment of graceful elegance I drop the rcx resulting it its
programming being wiped clean. Ah brilliant!!
With some help and parts loaned out from other members we quickly put some of
the rides on battery boxes and feed the others from a regulator.
Unfortunately, the rebuild just didnt have the same integrity the original
design had, mainly because of two reasons. One, I couldnt really recall
exactly how it supposed to go back together, and two, there is a bit of a time
crunch. Deep down knowing fully that the design is now flawed and very
unstable, I pretend that its fine, and run the monorail as it should have run,
only to have it come crashing through the park, wiping out a few other rides
with it as well. Well this is the point where you either pack it in or have a
good laugh, and just shake your head at your own stupidity. Of course, the
laughter begins.
Apparently the fair was doomed from the beginning, because by the end of the
show, when it was oh so carefully carried out to my vehicle it collapse
completely in this grand moment of slow-motion domino effect disaster resulting
in a huge round of laughter.... I must say, I have never seen one of my MOCs die
such a graceful death.

Wow!!! Your stuff is completely awesome!! What a great story. I wish I
could have been there.
Ive participated in a couple train displays...I think getting everything
together on-the-fly is so fun, not that I dont think there should be a large
measure of organization.
Anyways, thanks for showing off your work. I sure enjoyed looking at the

A bunch have asked this question: Basically neither Chris nor I have
recommendations, never having needed a hotel room in our own city. The only one
I can recommend is the Sheraton/Novotel in the actual airport nestled inside
Terminal 3. Problem is its bloody expensive.
But the International Center is along Airport/Dixon, so theres piles of hotels
there. Like this one:

Hi Janey-
the theme park looks just awesome, I love it! Great use of the pods for the cars
in the ride (a tilt a whirl?). You have a great imagination and an enviable eye
for detail. I am impressed with motorizing the whole thing too. Dont give up on
the elaborate moving models! The next ones probably wont self destruct ;)

Hi Cyndi,
Thank you. The pod ride is supposed to be spinning tea cups, I would guess it is
somewhat inspired by the Mad Hatters ride at Disney. When I first saw the pods,
my first thought was, theme park so I just had to run with it. The
tilt-a-whirl is actually around the back behind the bumper cars, using those
one piece panel train thingys (yes, I think that is the technical term for
them.)
I am planning a new and improved theme park, this time with a modular design so
transporting isnt so... umm entertaining, but after those disasters I doubt my
figs will ever get on any ride I build, and truly, can you blame them?

Sorry to hear about the troubles with the fair as a traveling carnival, but as
my brain is already overloaded by the fact that you built it and everything
works, it would probably start to leak out my ears were I to find out you did

condensed? you mean MICRO? (hehe, sorry..I just had to say that...).
I see you managed to get about four train shows worth of stories in your first
show--see, you were overdue! I think that means the next three might be
uneventful...
All kidding aside, looks incredible--I say keep building, dont go back to
sticking with houses....after all, wasnt it Edison who said genius is 1%
inspiration, and 99% perspiration? Its Lego...it falls apart...see, yours took
8 hours of vibration.. I wonder how long a MB one of those would have taken...I
guess 30 seconds...
Just think, Janey, youre not alone...remember what James Trobaughs buildings
looked like after a 12 hour ride to Brickfest? (For those of you that didnt
see it...well, JT had a few large clear containers that had bricks of the same
colors of his buildings...seems they vibrated loose as well).
Youll just have to build a better one that can withstand more vibration and
impact for the next show! (that, and maybe take some really good digital pics
so you know how it went together the first time...)

Good advice and you are right, I do plan to rebuild but I think I will do a bit
of structural studying before hand, probably hit up a few of my favourite
builders for some good suggestions and get it ready for a new show, I have a few
more rides finished that I couldnt fit in, maybe the new design will work those
in as well.

It was great that you could come to the show Janey and bring some awesome MOC's.
I am still renaming jpg's, but here are the video clips of the amusement park.
First 3 are from day 1 when half of them were not running.
The 4th one is from day 2 when they were all running.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of participating in my first train show.
|
Ahhh, good way to get your feet, nay, MOCs wet.
|
At one end of the display it was decided to have a kids area where they could
build. There was to be a small loop to run a train. I requested the middle
section of that track for a condensed version of a theme park, because I
thought that the kids would really get a kick out of seeing the rides.
When the park was nearly completed, my kids ask Are you going to get them
running soon?
|
Ohh noooo, the dreded task then befell you.
|
ME? Get them running?? That will mean motors and bushes and gears... OH MY!!
I tell them gently but firmly The rides are not going to move... as looks
of disappointment cross their faces, I quickly realise, a fair that doesnt
have moving rides is just not going to cut it.
So with great amounts of guidance from my oldest son, I reluctantly agree to
motorized the ferris wheel. Surprisingly, once we get that one moving, I get
hooked, and together we work on getting the other 6 rides running.
|
Hey right on.
|
Never having participated in a train show before this event, and never having
to move my MOC very far the idea of building modular didnt even enter my
head.
|
doh!
|
Lessons learned...
A cumbersome size MOC with underdeveloped structure holding a top heavy
design, mixed with a 8 hour drive on a major freeway..... I *should* have
known that this can only spell disaster. Well sure enough, by the time I
arrived in Ottawa, the fair had taken quite a beating.
|
Been there, done that. Pardon the phrase, but I hear ya.
|
Then in a moment of graceful elegance I drop the rcx resulting it its
programming being wiped clean. Ah brilliant!!
|
Arrrg.
|
With some help and parts loaned out from other members we quickly put some of
the rides on battery boxes and feed the others from a regulator.
|
Sweet. AFoL click.
|
Unfortunately, the rebuild just didnt have the same integrity the original
design had, mainly because of two reasons. One, I couldnt really recall
exactly how it supposed to go back together, and two, there is a bit of a
time crunch. Deep down knowing fully that the design is now flawed and very
unstable, I pretend that its fine, and run the monorail as it should have
run, only to have it come crashing through the park, wiping out a few other
rides with it as well. Well this is the point where you either pack it in or
have a good laugh, and just shake your head at your own stupidity. Of
course, the laughter begins.
|
This is always a tough thing. Hence my zen state of study before a show.
Just in case!
|
Apparently the fair was doomed from the beginning, because by the end of the
show, when it was oh so carefully carried out to my vehicle it collapse
completely in this grand moment of slow-motion domino effect disaster
resulting in a huge round of laughter.... I must say, I have never seen one
of my MOCs die such a graceful death.

Your park has many cool things to look at and you had the guts to motorize it.
Any advice for others that may think motors and gears are to much of a hassle?
Id like to see more MOCs like this and there are some great ones out there, no
doubt, that have similar functionality.
Nice work.

Thanks Eric.... As for the motors and gears, I avoided them as long as possible,
I truly did. A few times I did play around with some gears, I never seemed to be
able to get them to line up the way I wanted them to. Well apparently (as my son
suggested and much to my surprise), a gear box is a wondrous thing. Im sure
there are many ways around not using them, but for a newbie, it solves a lot of
problems.
Most of it is mind set though, I had myself convinced it was just too
complicated, when my son didnt buy that line anymore, and we got down to
working, it was relatively simple. Of course, we used the most basic of
solutions we could come up with and of course two minds are always better then
one.
If one idea failed we didnt try to fix, we just moved on to another idea
instead. I think that saves the frustration levels.
I still hold the upmost respect for builders that manage complex mechanical
MOCs.

Kids think outside the box so often, because many times, they havent had
enough experiences to formulate that so called box. I could tell you stories
of how kids sometimes outsmart their parents in unique and inventive ways--just
because parents forgot to think like a kid....
(my little brother outsmarted me when I was 17 and he was 4...hint-pick up and

Janey, by looking at the pics, it seems obvious you dont care that much about
Minifig security ! No restraining bars in the many attractions, no security
fences around some moving objects that could hurt the dumber minifigs who would
carelessly wander around...
I thought your theme park rocked. Its sad you couldnt make it work right
after the transport/crash. Id have appreciated pics of the final collapsing
though, but Im sure you didnt care to take pics at that point.

With Matts roller coaster at BrickFest PDX, IIRC, a successful trip was
counted if the car didnt come off the tracks. Minifigs being ejected did not
count against the success metrics.
Of course, since most of the figs tended to fall out at the apex of the vertical
loop, and thus fell directly into the path of the oncoming train, usually
causing a derailment, some may quibble at that definition.
Besides, the world needs less Timmys...
Note, I hear that Matts coaster will be running at NWBrickCon next weekend. I
havent decided if I want my sigfig to ride it or not. :-)
