Also on the subject of turntables, I would speculate that the only benefit
the threaded axle has is to keep the turntable together under high moment.
As the turntable starts to "peel apart", the axle keeps the top and bottom
"clamped" together.

Spot on. The trouble is that it doesn't really come apart under normal use,
and even when loaded with a kilo it is only a little bit, but still
together, if you know what I mean. The axle does keep the two pieces clamped
together, but also makes it harder to turn the turntable from the increased
friction resulting in a jerky movement I don't like. So I just loosen it
off, but it is there just in case. I think with a Beat Felber roller thrust
bearing this increased friction would not have such a negative effect.

Do you have plans to add a jib? How about a wheeled ballast carrier, or a
ringer attachment? (just kidding :-)

A jib would be nice, but to be honest I think the model is now done and it
is time for a code freeze - perhaps on the next crane. A ballast trailer
would also be good, but they are illegal in the UK as mobile cranes are not
permitted to tow trailers here!

(...) You page is fantastic! Well worth the wait, IMO. The amount of detail you've added provides readers with so much interesting information not only about your model, but real cranes too. Your presentation of different suspension systems is (...) (23 years ago, 25-Jun-02, to lugnet.technic)
