What too you so long? ;-)
You page is fantastic! Well worth the wait, IMO. The amount of detail you've
added provides readers with so much interesting information not only about
your model, but real cranes too. Your presentation of different suspension
systems is great, and makes for an excellent reference. I've certainly
learned a good bit!
I'm glad to finally see the details of your model. I've been speculating for
months on how you built certain parts. It's hard to comprehend how you fit
all those functions into such a compact chassis.
I particularly like the leadscrew for boom luffing. I like how you
constructed the drive mechanism so that the load is handled by pins seperate
from the axle transmitting the power (the axle holding the large bevel gear).
I certainly think the tire rollers under the superstructure help out your
turntable. I had a similar problem with my recent model. The entire
superstruture was fixed to the turntable only, with no additional support.
This didn't work very well, so I retrofitted a tile-to-tile contact support
using flat (normal) tiles on the crawler base, and the convex boat "tiles"
(http://guide.lugnet.com/partsref/search.cgi?q=2654) to the upperstructure.
This creates a rough bearing with the contact point minimized by the boat
piece. Surprisingly, the added friction isn't too bad, and the turntable
performance improved drastically. So, I would judge that your tires work
well! (but we'll see at Brickfest ;-)
Also on the subject of turntables, I would speculate that the only benefit
the threaded axle has is to keep the turntable together under high moment.
As the turntable starts to "peel apart", the axle keeps the top and bottom
"clamped" together.
After operating my recent model, I would conclude that if your turntable
isn't in danger of popping apart (under normal operating loads), it would be
safe leave the threaded axle very loose. It would then serve as a safety
catch just in case the turntable goes bang.
Anyway, you've really outdone yourself this time. Your attention to detail,
combined with clever design, has resulted in a spectacular model.
Do you have plans to add a jib? How about a wheeled ballast carrier, or a
ringer attachment? (just kidding :-)
