There have been technic sets
that are low on function and distinguishable only by their parts for a long
time.

And I didn't buy those either.

:-)

Neither do I.  But the Throwbots/RoboRiders/Bionicle have something the
other <$10 technic sets do not - a coolness factor.  Obviously not everyone has
a soft spot for action figures or robotic-looking things.  But I do.  And three
years ago when the Throwbots sucked me back into Lego, well, it was because
they were cheap and too cool to pass up.

Something else, when the Rahi monsters come out later on, they seem to have
actual "technic" functionality.  They look to be mostly reworks of Cyberslammer
concepts (I didn't like Cyberslammers either), but it is something more
substantial than what the Toa and Turaga sets are.
