These days, if I see an official Lego model that looks great or appears to work
well, my inclination is to download the instructions from Brickshelf and build it
from my existing parts. Sometimes one has to improvise a bit, or resort to cunning
use of different colours, but it is generally possible to get the mechanics right
with a bit of effort.

Of course, this is just me; my main interested in official Lego models are as
sources of spare parts, and I generally only build them once to see if there are
any cool building tricks used in the model. If you're into collecting sets, I
don't suppose this will be much good to you. Recently I've build the low loader
truck from 8872 and the Backhoe Loader (8862) in this fashion, and while they are
great models, I have to say that IMHO they are not worth 40 and 80 UKP
respectively they usually go for on Ebay - especially if you can build from from
your existing parts collection!

BTW, I've never thought of washing Lego in the washing machine - I have images of
16 length beams snapping and snagging and all other manner of horrors!
