Sean,
Up until recently I've also been a MISB freak. However, to complete my
collection I had to buy a used 8860. The set looked o.k. but nothing
spectacular (I usually enter into a drooling session after I build a set). I
was not really impressed with the set at all. But then I put all the pieces in
a cloth bag and drop the whole thing in the washing machine. When I rebuilt the
sets I was more than happy - it looks just like new. I spent a few hours
restoring the box and I now have a decent set to add to my collection. The 8868
is definitely a great set (just like the 8480 and 8479). 300$ may seem a little
steep unless you won't consider used sets. I suggest that you get one for
around $150 and wash it in the machine(using dish soap) - you will be
surprised.
