I think that will only serve to divide the group.

Yes, and that should be the primary aim of DATabase or whatever we call it.

I've been having second thoughts to limiting technology, given the wide
variety of magic, super-heroes, aliens, and super-technology. I've been
racking my brain trying to come to some sort of compromise by suggesting a
timeline where all could show their creations, but some things overlap, such
as Earth history in relation to the above things. For example, Earth comes
into many Lego universes, but each one treats it's future with relation to
space differently, sometimes very differently. Some universes have mechs
protecting Earth, others have Earth being almost devoid of life so mass
exploration and exodus are underway.
To update my previous idea: maybe we need a timeline with branches on it that
show how, where and when paradigms merge into and splinter from real life
showing possible outcomes given how history might have changed if such-n-such
happened. This is to encourage the inclusion of the fantastic as well as the
mundane and not necessarily have them collide. Those space histories that have
already happened, like Star Wars, would, of course, just stand alone. Such
histories could be presented on their own lines if they are never involved
with Earth. Same idea with those histories that have yet to happen.
Personally, while I'm not necessarily for more magical sci-fi, it's clear that
some are, and are attracted by it. It's not my aim to alienate other space
paradigms and impose certain restrictions (such as no transporters, light
sabres, etc., as I don't want to throw out fun in lieu of science) now that
I've read what more folks have to say. If we use such a timeline, it might
work. I want everyone to be included.
Thoughts? Critiques? If folks post how their stuff fits (or not) into an Earth
timeline, I'd like to post a timeline including how the paradigms fit in.
People's web pages would be accessible along various points of the line or
their splinters more likely. I'd need people's paradigm/Legoverse/universe
name and how, when/where it fits, if it fits at all. At
www.baylug.org/titan/lugnetspace.htm you'll find a mockup timeline. The Krelb
Universe does not intersect with Earth at all, but is included just to show
inclusion of another fictitious parallel universe, thought at this point it
may or may not be subject to the timeline. Dunno yet.

Town has the luxury of it's own imposed yet widely-accepted restrictions
already. This is because everyone knows what's goes into the making of a town
and what doesn't.(1) Therefore quibbling about light-sabres in Town is moot.
While some may argue (successfully) that Town is it's own universe, Space is a
*much* wider theme (wouldn't we all agree?) that includes whole worlds filled
with towns and more. That's where the problem lies: space is too big to be
portrayed as a neat little package for all us space nuts to develop and use
coherently and consistently because there's no working IRL model. But even if
there was, we'd still change it to how we'd want it cuz it's Lego, and we can!

(1) Yet, theoretically, this could also raise problems/discussion too. What if
someone wants to make a nuclear reactor for Town's Datsville? In Space,
there's rarely a problem with this kind of installation, but in Town it can be
a big deal indeed, given how some feel about the disposal of nuclear waste.
