I think the expansion board is A-OK as it is. (I'm being rather selfish since the Hartford Firefighting contest is in April). -Jim (28 years ago, 8-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  large # of digital I/O's

Check out the 82C55. In a 40 pin package, it has 24 bits of digital bidirectional I/O, and can be bit- or byte- addressed. It's cheap (like $4 or so in quantity). The 40-pin DIP package is big, but not compared to 3 20-pin DIP packages which it can (...) (28 years ago, 8-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  FW: I agree-

Servos outputs are good, but generic handyboard serial output to Scott Edward's Serial Servo Controller would be faster to implement and design, much and simpler to work with, and would be extensible to other serial projects too. (...) (28 years ago, 8-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

I'd agree with this option - I don't need any more inputs, but I do need 4 logical outputs 2-4 Hi-current outputs Serial communications 1 (preferably 2) sonar connectors I could really use that second sonar. I don't suppose there is a way you could (...) (28 years ago, 8-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Re: expansion board schematic posted

While I've only been working with the Handy Board for a week or so, I would also like to see several more outputs added. Perhaps some combination such as 8 digital (CMOS) outputs, and 8 of the dual-transistor types. If you could rig it up with (...) (28 years ago, 8-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

(...) Thanks, Randy, my good man! Sorry if took a bit of playing with good old "honoris studioso". But you can't blame a guy for trying. Especially if it yields results. :) Alex. (28 years ago, 8-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  IC development

(...) OK, Uncle! I apologize that, at times in the past year, IC development has taken a back seat to our 32-bit C environment and vision system development. We realize that we have made a commitment to the community to come out with IC 3.1, and we (...) (28 years ago, 7-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Re: Expansion board

Hi Everyone, We (Digital Micro Systems) have an expansion board which we've been beta-testing for a while, but have not released yet. This seems like an appropriate time to ask for any feedback regarding the design before release. Anyway, the (...) (28 years ago, 7-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  digital outputs

Just to be clear, I wanted to ask if I am right to think that the HB, with no expansions, is configurable for ONLY 5 digital outputs? I'm aware of the #9 pin on the output bus. It works fine. But, if someone could explain in more detail the J6 (...) (28 years ago, 7-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  I agree-

More servo outputs would be great. I too would like to control a lynxmotion arm with the handyboard. Or perhaps a legged robot with servos or servo controlled hydraulics. I vote for more outputs.   Re: expansion board schematic posted

It is largely a space issue, not only for chips but connectors. It definitely would be feasible to remove one of the analog muxes and substitute an output latch in its place. Then the specs would be 8 general purpose, 4 hi impedance, 4 LEGO analog (...) (28 years ago, 7-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  RE: expansion board schematic posted

I've got one comment "balance". The expansion board adds 24 new inputs and only 6 new outputs. Perhaps I'm atypical but I don't need any more inputs to the handy board, I've got those aplenty, but I'm screaming for outputs to control other parts of (...) (...) Hmmm... why not do this? Use a 74273 and tie it to the HB's data lines and strobe it with Y0 (or Y2 or Y4)? This would create a latched output "port" at address 0x4000. Tie two of the 74273 outputs to the 'A' side of two [N]AND gates (...) (28 years ago, 7-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  AS11 IC?

Where can I get the assembler AS11 IC which is mentioned in The Handy Board Technical Reference Manual? I have found only a MAC version and I am using a PC. Thank you, Edwin (28 years ago, 7-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Range finding question?

Hi! I'm looking for a way to tell the range between my board and an 'active' point that is between 5 and 500 meters away.   Motors????

Well, I am about to get over the shock of frying my L293's. Now to address the motor issue. 1) What kind of permanent magnet motor can I use on a bot that is about 9 inch in diameter.   memory

1. Is there a way of expanding the 32K memory in the HB? How? 2. I want to reduce the weight of my project by changing the battery.   blown L293's

Bill, I think the moral of the story is: DO NOt use 3v motors with the Handy Board. They draw too much current. Use motors rated at least 6v, even that can be a problem. I should put this in the manual somewhere... See (URL) to buy more L293's. (...) (28 years ago, 6-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  Re: IR sensor question

As illustrated in the hb manual, the QRD and QRB sensors do NOT use modulated IR light. the sensors as wired just turn on the IR emitter like a little light bulb, and the received sensor value is a combination of reflected IR light and general (...)   Re: "Old" (pre-6500) Polaroid sonar boards?

Well, that was too easy. Guess I should have read all the way through the FAQ earlier... *thud. I've now got the MISO output driving the VSW input on the sonar board, and am reading a digital input for the MFLOG signal. Works like a charm. I'd still (...)   Re: Motor Problems

Geeze - sounds like my kind of luck. Well, according to the Handy Board FAQ, there are two varieties of the 293; the 239B and the 293D - the "D" is rated at 600mA/channel and has spike suppression diodes built in, while the "B" is rated at (...)   int's and long's

Greetings all Anybody know if IC can support unsigned int's or long's. My situation is, I need to load a 32-bit signed number, ie a long, into the HB.   Motor Problems

I left a email about my motor problem earlier this evening. Well, since then I have changed my code to use ports 2 and 3 and the bot worked just fine for a little while, then both 293 chips smoked. I guess I was drawing too much current. Anyway I am (...) (28 years ago, 6-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)

  "Old" (pre-6500) Polaroid sonar boards?

Has anyone done anything with the "old" Polaroid boards? (I've got some I pulled out of some auto-focus cameras I bought cheap many years ago.)   IR sensor question

I have a very basic doubt regarding the working of the QRD114 sensor.   My motors quit!

  Re: Downloading problems

The memory circuit is probably flaky, or, you zapped a 6811 address line output. If you haven't already tried, swap the 6811 with a known good one. If that doesn't work, examine the ram chip addr, data bus, and select signals with a logic probe when (...) (28 years ago, 5-Feb-97, to lugnet.robotics.handyboard)
