"Old" (pre-6500) Polaroid sonar boards?

Has anyone done anything with the "old" Polaroid boards?  (I've got
some I pulled out of some auto-focus cameras I bought cheap many
years ago.)  I can hook them up and make them work by hand, and I've
got one partially wired into a Handy Board, but I still need to come
up with some driver software.  The old style boards take an input
(VSW) which tells them to take a reading, and provide two outputs;
XLOG, which goes active when the sonar pulse is actually transmitted,
and MLOG which goes active either when an echo is received, or after
a "time out" period beyond which an echo will never be received.
Being new to the Handy Board, and the 6811, it's going to take me a
bit to figure out how to get a digital output set up, and to write up
a driver (probably in assembler) to time the pulses.  Also, most of
the interface circuits I've seen involve using a transistor to drive
the VSW signal, and running the XLOG and MLOG through a 2003 buffer
chip or similar, before going to TTL logic.  Granted the board
usually operates on 6VDC, but it also works fine on 5VDC, so I was
hoping for a simpler (i.e. just plug it into the HB i/o ports) way of
interfacing to it, but I don't want to blow up my HB testing if that
really works.  I've checked the HB message archives, home page, etc,
and haven't found anything about sonars prior to something called the
Polaroid 6500, except a small snippet of code someone apparently
wrote for the 6.270 board.  Any suggestions?

My design team would like to incorporate two polaroid sensors with our
handy board.  We were wondering just how do we send the INIT pulse from
the HB to the Polaroid sensors?
The member in charge of writing the code for our robot quickly drafted
up some pseudo code:
