Allan,

You seem to be assuming that LEGO tossed out the applicant list and
pciked
whomever they wanted.  Why do you think that?

I hate to say it, but it is obvious that reputation matters.  Look at the
original four MUPs.  They have fantastic reputations (and justifiably so),
and
LEGO chose them for that reason.  With big reputations comes the
opportunity for
big impact.

Lugnet is a known way to examine reputations, so is reading activity on
legofan.  If you have been having a big impact on the community outside of
the
commonly used forums, how would LEGO know?

I suspect that LEGO is wiser than you give them credit for, but at 1000
to
100, everyone only has a 1 in 10 chance anyway.  We don't know the actual
count,
which may be more like 5,000.

I'm sorry you're disappointed before LEGO has even announced the results.
Calling the process unfair before the results are in is probably not wise
though, as you may have just bumped yourself off the list.  Who knows?

Play well,
Kev

No, I'm not thinking that they've completely tossed out the list. But I am
thinking that my, already very small chance, just got a whole lot smaller.
How else can I interpret Steve's post about submitting a list of candidates
that he feel should be in the project. And he did say a "big list". So I
wonder: just how big is "big"? And just how many slots are left once TLG has
gone through that list?

And that's why I am felling somewhat disappointed right now. TLG told me
that applicants would be chosen from those who answered the questionnaire.
They never said anything about having to go to Lugnet.

You seem to have a very high regard for Lugnet and its users. I'm not going
to argue about that - Lugnet is, I'll gladly admit, one of the greatest
gatherings of AFOLs. But, and this is a big but, it's not the only place.

I ask again: why should users of Lugnet have a greater chance of getting
admitted to the program? The applicants should be chosen based on their
answers to the questionnaire - not based on what newsgroups they might, or
might not, use.

If you think that the participants should be chosen based on their
reputation - then why not be honest about it? Why not tell people what's
going on? Why not tell them that they might not be admitted to the program,
simply because TLG has already pre-selected a group of users with a certain
reputation? And thus there are fewer slots left for the rest of the
applicants.

And if I've been taken of the list for speaking my mind - then my respect
for TLG has just gone out the window. I'm simply voicing my concern about
this. I'm telling TLG that one of their faithful long-time customers is
feeling rather sad and disappointed right now.

But ok, I'll admit that cheating was too strong a word. You, Steve, and TLG
have my apologies for that. But I'll maintain that it is, at the very least,
favouritism towards Lugnet users. As I've said before, this is not
necessarily a bad thing - I'm just wondering why TLG isn't honest about it?

- Allan

(...) Actually, I doubt LUGNET is the only place LEGO looks for talent, or that it's the only place that Steve might have suggested folks from. It *is* where Steve spends a lot of on-line hours, but there are four other MUPs in the original group (...) (19 years ago, 10-Feb-06, to lugnet.robotics)
