Since when can Pov ray render an image of any useful size in realtime, or
something approaching realtime? I haven't tested on my XP1600+, but my
Duron 800 took a few seconds to render a 640 x 480 image - the minimum I
consider useful for determining what this type of simulation is useful for.
Rendering the movie overnight is a possiblity, but then the day long testing
cycles make it more worth your time to build the actual robot. Perhaps I
would get finished with my pneumatic walker if such a thing existed. ;)
Actually, there is a program I no longer have a link to (it was in the
legbots group on Yahoo, if you want to search. Fairly recent) Anyway, it
modeled the leg dynamics of a robot in real time, based on the created
terrain, the created robot, and values you input like it's center of
gravity. Very realistic, and realtime. However, it used OpenGL for
rendering, and was a polygon based gradiant shaded method (Gurad? I haven't
flipped through my 3d graphics papers in a while).

| (...) Yes - it's using ray-traced rendering to get good realism. However, these days you could do pictrures that are nearly as good with fancy OpenGL rendering in realtime. A modern 3D graphics card can easily draw at least a hundred thousand (...) (22 years ago, 14-Sep-02, to lugnet.robotics)

| Wow - can you imagine if the simulator could be hooked up with MLCad and LDraw? Then you could build a robot with a complex structure, program it, and have it run around a virtual world, all rendered with POV-Ray! Man, who need reality after that? (...)
