How about a Bridge Too Far.  Going with the Scrap Heap Challenge theme, we could do
bridging robots.  Set a fixed distance between two tables, and an initial robot size
that is smaller then the gap.  Your robot must make it from one table to the other.
We could do head to head races, first across wins.

That could be slightly hazardous to the robot's health... :)

I don't think it would be any more hazardous then the Monkey contest.  Plus it requires
the development of multiple modes of operation.  You have to drive up to the edge of the
table, deploy the bridging mechanism, cross the gap and retract the bridge.

Infact it could be setup as a race such that your robot has to drive up to the gap, cross
the gap, and then drive across a finish line somewhere on the second table.

There's no reason you couldn't stand by your robot, just like in the monkey contest, and
catch it if something went wrong.
