    Re: 6 months! —Steve Bliss
[moved from lugnet.starwars] (...) I just stumbled onto mp3 music. My 4.6Gig spare drive has about 400Meg left... I wonder how hard it would be to create an mp3-CD player? Put together a CD-ROM drive, DOS-on-a-chip, a DSP, and some custom playback (...) (26 years ago, 25-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

        Re: 6 months! —Matthew Miller
(...) You've seen the Diamond Rio? (URL) not a CD player, but rather has 32MB of flash. Not nearly as much as a CD of course, but still. (26 years ago, 25-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

         Re: 6 months! —Lee Jorgensen
go to (URL) IS a CD-MP3 player ... plays CD-R's and CD-RW's with MP3s in the root directory. The only drawback is that it's SRP is 299.95 USD Also, if you go to (URL) they have a hardware section that will list different options available. They also (...)       (...) Thanks for pointing this out. I now know what I want for Christmas. :) Besides the LEGO, of course. Steve (26 years ago, 25-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

         Re: 6 months! —Steve Bliss
(...) I thought about that. Didn't realize you could load tracks into a RAM for offline playback. If the Diamond Rio continues to survive prosecution and persecution, it could be the killer app for a consumer-level internet. Steve (26 years ago, 25-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

         Re: 6 months! —Jeff Stembel
(...) Only 32MB?? I thought it could hold an hours worth of music? All mp3's I have are about a meg a minute! That means it can only hold about a half an hour of music on it! Jeff (26 years ago, 25-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

         Re: 6 months! —Matthew Miller
(...) That's what the specs say. And yeah, I'd heard that too. I dunno. (26 years ago, 25-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

Matthew Miller wrote in message ... (...) MP3 offers variable compression. It goes down to 16kbit/s, at which rate 32MB lasts 16ks, or 3 and a half hours. Sounds like telephone music, but what the heck. Moz (26 years ago, 26-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

         Re: 6 months! —Matthew Miller
(...) A friend just told me that it comes with 32MB built in, and comes with a 32MB card. Which is even cooler, 'cause you could have a small collection of those. (26 years ago, 3-Dec-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

         Re: 6 months! —Jasper Janssen
(...) Yeah, cool. Especially since they're probably using either a propietary format (which means basically it's a waste of money to get cards) or a very compatible format, of which probably even larger versions of memory are availbale. If you know (...) (26 years ago, 3-Dec-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

        Re: 6 months! —Mike Stanley
(...) Well, Diamond has already released a portable mp3 player that contains no moving parts. Kinda like a Walkman. Stores mp3's in RAM. I know of a couple of efforts to produce an mp3 cd player. (...) IMO there are no gray areas for personal use. (...) (26 years ago, 25-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

        Re: 6 months! —Terry Keller
(...) Me too! Now I just wish my 20x drive would work right for ripping. So far, I only have been able to get the double-speed drive to rip. (...) Sounds like an interesting idea.      (...) Plextor is the only way to go for high speed audio extraction. I'd rather have my 12-20Plex than any other CD on the market, except for maybe the new UW 40Plex. (26 years ago, 26-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

I read the thread about the mp3's, and a few weeks ago I stumbled across this site: (URL) gives you a description of how to build a MOBILE mp3 player, for instance for in your car! dave. (26 years ago, 26-Nov-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

        Re: 6 months! —Sarah Heacock
(...) But if you have not BOUGHT the music yet, do you even have a right to duplicate for personal use? I'd check the warranty on the places you are getting these.         Re: 6 months! —Matthew Miller
(...) No, of course you don't. (...) Nah, you really do have the right to make copies for your personal use. Furthermore, if they try to deny it, there's all sorts of shady issues. Like, do you have the right to copy digital music to a ram buffer (...) (26 years ago, 17-Dec-98, to lugnet.off-topic.fun)

        Re: 6 months! —Lee Jorgensen
     Why be worried? We don't have door-to-door Compu-Cops ... (1) Regardless ... I've made my whole collection of CD's into MP3's ...          Re: 6 months! —Mike Stanley
(...) Hrmmm. I'm in the market for a 50+" TV right now.          Re: 6 months! —Matthew Miller

         Re: 6 months! —Mike Stanley

         Re: 6 months! —Mike Stanley
