Agreed. Moreover, superfluous legislation of this sort serves only to
provide members of Congress with public relations fodder, a la "I voted to
protect Our Nation's Flag, so-and-so did not--what does that tell you?"
I concur with you and would not personally burn the flag (since I feel no
reason to do so), but, if I were so inclined, I would happily wipe my
posterior with The Flag, The Constitution, and/or The Declaration of
Independence, knowing that such an action would be a protected form of
expression.
This sort of enforced veneration of an object is more or less
indistinguishable from Secular Idolatry, and I'm not interested in being
told what to worship.
