I knew I shouldn't have mentioned that.
I haven't read any of her other books but I knew she was noted for writing
things from "a women's perspective". Which I don't have a problem with - at
least normally. The book starts interestingly enough (it's the Trojan War
from Cassandra's perspective and has a good take on the
patriarchal/matriarchal conflict inherent in the way the Greek pantheon of
gods came about) but quickly descends into one long whine about the whole
world sucks because of men and male gods. What's aggravating is that at
certain points when she is not quite so actively grinding her axe, a decent
story breaks out - which teased me into hoping that somehow I should finish
the book (don't, the ending is a classic piece of terrible storytelling).
It left such a foul taste in my mouth I've had it at the back of my mind to
do a retelling of the Trojan War myself. I've actually been finding the
bits and pieces not covered by Homer, so maybe one day.
Maybe she's an acquired taste, but she's joined Stephen Donaldson and Terry
Brooks in my Incinerator Special File.
Oooooo, I shouldn't have said that either!
