The problem, if there is one, was created by bizarre rules about what could and couldn't be sold on Sundays.
Whilst for many years, much long after the US had changed, it was 'illegal' for most shops to trade on Sunday, however
it was also clear that many people wanted to shop.
Prime example was DIY. Folks want to do DIY at weekends - but stores were not allowed to sell them DIY products.
Challenge was though - how do you differentiate?
So they basically gave in and said anyone can sell anything, anytime.
They have recently got rid of the no-alcohol on sunday mornings in the UK I think.
