I would have expected your browser to launch a general purpose NNTP client such
as Gnus, Pan, Thunderbird or Outlook.

If the only newsgroups you read are those on Lugnet, then the only benefit to
using a general purpose NNTP client would be that it is better at keeping track
of what you have read and what you haven't. (The Lugnet web interface is
actually the best web-based NNTP client I know of.)
But some of us don't just read Lugnet. I follow about 40 newsgroups besides
those I read on Lugnet. Others also have interests besides Lugnet.
There's also a slight drawback in using a general purpose NNTP client: Lugnet
uses its very own FTX format, which isn't directly supported by all NNTP
clients. (Another small drawback is that my phone doesn't have a NNTP client
(yet), so this message is actually posted through the web interface.)
Play well,
Jacob
