The gigantic advantage with Lugnet IMO is that I never have log in here to post,
once I registred several yesrs ago. It may have been a pain then, I don't even
remember... But of course, if I'm the only one to experience it this way, it
doesn't help Lugnet.

Lugnet has been the central draw for at least four main categories of
discussions:
* LDraw - technincal issues and software development and standards.
* LDraw - presenting parts, models and renderings, discussing techniques
* LEGO - presenting models and ideas, discussing building techniques
* LEGO - buy, sell and categorize parts and sets and themes
Of sourse you can find more topics, or divide them into more subcategories.
Most of the discussions have been moved to other sites, like peeron, bricklink,
and theme specific sites. The good thing about this is that those sites are
better equipped to host such information. The bad thing is that I may have to
browse ten or fifteen different sites to get all the information and updates I
want instead of one.
Let's face it. The forum shift has already taken place, wether we like it or
not. At least when in comes to LEGO issues. (Minor exception: Sometimes I prefer
the Lugnet Guide for parts or sets, but mostly I use Peeron and Bricklink.) More
than 95% of the LDraw part discussion is at ldraw.org, and presenting LDrawn
models - well, that's spread out all over the internet I guess(?)
To try to reclaim the position Lugnet once had is not a realistic goal I'm
afraid. I guess we have to accept its decentralization, for good and for bad.
So, what is there left to protect and develop?
* LDraw - technincal issues and software development and standards.
* LDraw - presenting unofficial parts not suitable for the Tracker
I can't think of any other format to discuss these issues, other than threaded
form here in Lugnet! SourceForge uses some really hard to overview interface and
an alien terminology that takes great efforts just to become familiar with.

Oh, no no no no, please no! How can anyone ever be inspired by such an
abomination as flickr? Logging in and uploading pictures are royal pains - and
getting those darn pictures where I want them is virtually impossible. Linking
to a picture feels most uncertain whether it is correct or not. The discussion
format is out of the question, and so is the unintelligible terminology
(photostreams, sets, groups, galleries, tags, archieves etc etc etc...) Hey
what's wrong with plain folders and sub-folders, like in BrickShelf???
I think a new forum has to be more inspired by Lugnet (not the login procedure
and other downsides of course!) than for example flickr. An option to deselect
excessive graphics and distracting irrelevant information overflow would be
highly desirable, at least to me. What we need to adapt from modern forums is
its connectability to other sites like facebook and so on.

| Though I don't yet agree, I have noticed a serious drop in new involvement. I also must admit my own lack of involvement. LUGNET was once the only place to discuss each LEGO topic, but has not done its part to keep up with modern technology and (...) (14 years ago, 27-Oct-10, to lugnet.cad.dev.org.ldraw)
