Here's a similar press release at the M$ site:
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2001/jan01/01-10legopr.asp

What should we expect from this?

- Current RCX switching on will become a boot procedure lasting at least 2
minutes.
- Same for switching off.
- Attaching sensors and motors will require at least one reboot. This until
a new plug&play version will be out, able to properly recognize (sometimes )
the sensors. When it fails, and will do, we'll have to manually install the
sensor drivers, being sure to download the latest sensor drivers from the M$
site.
- New RCX will have a larger display to display error messages, and 6 new
buttons marked Abort, Retry, Ignore and Ctr,Alt,Del.
- Every 15 days M$ will release a new patch - sorry I meant Service Pack -
that will make the system malfunctions more complex and will introduce some
new ones.
- To get your RCX communicate with other RCXs we'll have to buy the Server
version of the software, and a Client license for every connected RCX.
- Software upgrades won't be free anymore.

Just joking.
I hope :-)

This is a disaster... If M$ does with LEGO that they do to everyone else we can
soon expect LEGO to try to pull the plug on all Free Thinking. Especially
anything to do with Linux. V2 may not allow 3rd party programs to work with it
now. You can also forget about a Mac version... User agreements 100's of pages
long.

Ugg, I never would have thought that M$ would have interfered with my Fav toy...

(...) Whoah there Dean, calm down. What this press release boils down to is: 1) Microsoft powering the S@H stuff on the Web. * Hey, it can't get any worse than it is now - whenever I try to go there it's so slow as to be completely unusable. 2) LEGO (...) (...) Hey Dean, this is not necessarily going to be a disaster. As much as I dislike Microsoft as a company, I have to admit that during the past year or so they have made some impressive improvements to some Mac software. Some critics have gone so (...) In trying to read substance from the press release on the Lego site, all I found was this: Microsoft will advertise and sell Legos. TLG will write software that is compliant with Microsoft protocols. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but then again, (...) (23 years ago, 12-Jan-01, to lugnet.robotics)
