: And Beaker, I share your libertarian philosophy. Since when did the
: libertarian philosophy become an excuse for "as nasty as they want to
: be"? There is a difference between liberty and licentiousness.

To me, the heart of libertarian philosophy is the recognition that most
things that people do is their own business.  This includes the choice
whether or not to use profanity.  I especially do not see how just the
use of profanity could possibly detract from the designation of 'master
modeler' ... if the behavior were deliberately inflammatory or abusive
then I would see your point, but the casual use of such language in a
harmless fashion is just that, harmless.  A great modeler with a love
and zeal for the hobby and valid contributions to our community should
not be overlooked just because some fraction of the community does not
like his language.

: I grew up hearing every foul, degrading, profane, blasphemous, nasty,
: etc. word and phrase and I've heard many more since. They do not shock
: or impress me. I don't think it is "harmful." I think it is pathetic
: that such words are the best that people can think of.

This reminds me of the greatest single piece of bathroom-graffiti I ever
saw:

'Profanity is a linguistic crutch for ignorant motherfuckers.'

This isn't exactly where I wanted this conversation to go, I think there are other, more important issues to thrash out, but I certainly don't OWN it, it will go where it will. That said, the following contributes to the tangentiality problem: I'll (...) (26 years ago, 30-Dec-98, to lugnet.general)
