Well, there was also the CLASSIC Classic castle "body armor" piece that came
with some of the earliest sets, like yellow castle as seen here:

This piece is less like a breastplate and more like a tabard, though.

Yeah, it doesn't really "read" as armor.  I can see why they improved it.
